He could certainly be silly, but he was fiercely loyal and stood firm in his commitments to community and causes. He would definitely be voicing his opinions re: the state of our democracy. Love him so.

Bill was one of our first friends in Portland. Being around him felt good for the soul. I appreciated his kindness, honesty, and humor. I am glad to have known him.

The day Billy and I met in 1977 is still etched in my memory. I was asked to help set up balanced traction in Ortho. We chatted, found common ground, and developed a lasting friendship. We bonded over hikes, great laughs, night shifts, and much more. We sipped champagne in the morning after the end of night shifts as salmon grilled in the park. One particular memory of how we established our personal greeting comes to mind. As young RNs working the night shift, the need to pass gas as without giving offense could arise. We would often find ourselves passing in the night adjacent to the door of a long term, historically unresponsive patient. One particular night, we must have been particularly, unintentionally, prolific. The unresponsive patient was heard by us both saying, "Get that dog out of here!" Ever after, we greeted each other with, "Hi, get that dog out of here!" The hilarity of that memory is eternal. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor and adventure. Our adventures included skinny ski trips where I was often on my butt in the snow while Bill, Barb, and Chas were laughing. Hikes into Hart's Cove watching Orcas on the Oregon Coast. My delay in part posting this note, comes from a long and unsuccessful search of a particular photo of "the guys" sitting on the rocks at the midpoint of our coastal hike one day. One of my best day ever memories with the best group of friends a man can have. Apparently lost the picture even as the memory of that incredible day remains. I can still see Bill as a handsome, laughing, physical young beast, conquering slopes, steep climbs, challenging hikes, and difficult patients with success and aplomb. Gonna miss you my friend, already do.

The last time I saw Bill & Maddie was at the surprise 70th birthday party my wife threw me 6 years ago. I'm still not sure exactly how we became old men with health problems and poor diagnoses, yet such relentlessly happens with the march of time. It was with a heavy heart I learned of all the health struggles Billy had endured since we moved to Idaho. The warrior mentality he put towards outdoor adventures he channeled into as much recovery as was possible. He and Maddie forever have my utmost respect and love. Having just returned from an amazing Alaska expedition, I am saddened by my inability to share this experience with him. Billy is forever in my memory as a fine human being in every sense of the word, a kind and gentle soul. Bill, a great guy, a terrific friend, a nice man; I think that says it all. Loved you since 1977, Brent Butler

Dearest Maddy,
We are truly sorry for the loss of cousin Bill. He was truly a unique man. I have many fond memories of family times together, although I wish their were more like Trinidad family reunion, white water rafting, Thanksgiving,
salmon feast and of course, I think one of the last times that we were together at Christmas time when Tyson had moved down to Southern California we had a wonderful gathering at the house. Time sure does fly, it seems like it goes faster and faster every year as we get older. So always treasure the moments, and the memories, because our time here is truly short. We send our love and prayers to all our family members at this difficult time.
Love your Southern California family

Billy was the first guy I got to know when I came to work at MPH almost 50 yrs ago. We were oddities in a world of women and became fast friends. We bonded over cribbage late into the night, yakking it up over our very different upbringings, moving furniture through upper story windows, and the music of the 60´s.
Soon after we made quartet when B2 and Bobby Bob arrived at MPH and we´re all still great friends.
I remember Billy as being one of the most empathetic people ever. He could feel others pain and joy and share it with them. Billy was never without a kind word for people and always looked for the best in all. I´ll always love him for that as this broadened my outlook also.
But most of all Billy was a good friend who I will miss dearly.
Thanks for all!

I became friends with Maddie in 1974 in nursing school at Boise State University. She helped me study the night before state boards. I moved to Portland in 1976 to work at Meridian Park Hospital. Maddie moved to Portland a couple years later and I introduced her to my frisbee friend Billy Bob. After he met Maddie that was all he could talk about. I am so very sorry for your loss Maddie. ..........Bobby Bob

I first met Billy when I was 16. I started cleaning house for he and Maddy, this evovled into a long lasting friendship, that has spanned more than 35 years. Billy was a good listener and genuine through and through. When I bought my first house he helped me with his carpentry skills construct a section of fence/gate and gave me tips on homeownership...I was 24 at the time. When Bill would garden he was always share his bounty and my first mint julep was also thanks to Bill and Maddy.(Kentucky Derby parties) My fondness of Billy will forever live on in my heart and he was loved dearly by those who graced his presence. Love me some Billy! I love you dearly Mad....I'm deeply sorry for his loss. Amy

The first time I met Bill he was stuck in the mud past the axels of his VW van in Friend, Or. That was the beginning of a true friendship. We lived in a teepee then moving into a rustic house in Sumpter. So many fond memories of fun times.... We are going to miss Bill tremendously and hope life brings you (Maddy) much peace & comfort in the days ahead. We love you guys, Dave Hurd & Teresa Rohwer

Dad gave me some of my favorite childhood memories. I will always be grateful for the camping and fishing trips that we took together, taking me to see the Mariners play, playing with his model trains, or just playing a simple game of chess. And all of the "dad jokes". He made it clear that he loved me no matter what, and how proud of me he was, which was the best feeling. I was impressed by how many talents he seemed to be able to pick up including gardening, kayaking, sewing, and of course making really cool cigar box guitars. Dad really was a groovy guy and I thank him for everything!

I feel blessed to have known Bill and to have had both him and Maddy as neighbors. Bill was one of the most kind and genuine individuals I have known. He always went out of his way to make my son, Connor, and I feel welcome and included. And Connor adored him! I have many fond memories of watching them together and I am so thankful for his influence in Connor´s life. He made a difference in our lives and we will miss him. Thank you for being you Bill. We love you.

Madelon it was shocking to read this knowing Bill is no longer with you and us the friends who shared so much together over many years. Bill was exciting to be around when I lived near, he could do almost anything which made me enjoy his company. From building, cars etc. There seemed to be nothing he couldn´t accomplish once he set his mind on it.
God Bless you Madelon along with all of us who enjoyed knowing Bill.

Next door neighbors for 22 years - couldn't ask for better folks than Maddy and Bill. First time we spied Bill after buying our house, we noticed his Grateful Dead tattoo - we knew we had picked the right neighbors! So many memories - parties, good food, music and Bill's cool trucks. We will miss Bill, but we are here for you Maddy.
With love,
Merrie and Jon

Whenever we were greeted by Bill, they way he would say our names and envelope us in hugs, made us all feel so loved. We loved our times with him, as they were filled with laughter and kindness, curiosity and respect. His voice was smooth and grounding, his humor robust and soul-filling. He was an uncle to my family - and he is missed!

I am saddened that Bill´s declining health made his last few years so difficult, but I rejoice in his renewal as his beautiful spirit transitions and transcends. He was a sweet, caring and insightful man. The world was a better place for having him in it. Eternal be his memory.

Bill was our next neighbor for the last eight years. He will be greatly missed by all of his 35th Avenue neighbors for his good humor, pleasant smile and cheerful spirit with neighbor kids. My wife, Liz, and I will always be grateful for Bill and Maddy welcoming us to the neighborhood. We enjoyed our favorite drinks at our summertime backyard and block parties, shared love for our dogs and helped each other with outside projects. Bill will always remembered in our hearts. Rest in peace.

Like most of my good friends, I met Bill at the dog park. I loved that his sidekick was named Django Reinhardt and knew that we could be friends. He and Madelon spent the next fifteen years proving me right.

Bill was the best listener. It didn't matter who you were, how old you were. or what you were talking about - Bill would really listen. This certainly endeared him to my son, Kooper, who was a seven year old chatterbox when we first met Bill. Bill heard him and it meant so much to Kooper and to all of us.

We will miss his irreverent humor, his thunderous laugh, his commitment to leaving the world a bit better, and, most of all, his friendship.

How lucky we are to have known him.

Bill and I were both nurses at OHSU during the strike in 2001/02, but we hadn't met. I was making a video about the strike, and the morning I was going to film it, I woke up to this voicemail: "Hi. I'm Bill. I hear you're making a video. I'd like to be a part of it." That is how I met Bill and Maddy who would become my dear friends. Thank you for being a part of it, Bill and thank you for being a part of my life.

I found this photo, taken in June of 1994, when my friend John and I visited Bill and Mad. We made many visits in the following years, and always had good times together. It's nice to remember those days. Wishing Bill a peaceful journey, and comfort to Mad and all family members.

What a long, strange trip it's been. My life with Bill was full of love, fun, learning, and of course a few troubles. I'm so grateful to have shared so much of my life with him.
