With thirty years of service, he was the longest-serving CEO of any hospital in Connecticut and the longest-serving CEO ever affiliated with Ascension Health, the national health system of which St. Vincent's is a member. Before his retirement in 2004, Riordan also oversaw the construction and dedication of the St. Vincent's outpatient pavilion. He also presided over the affiliation and teaching hospital agreement with New York Presbyterian Healthcare System. Under his leadership, St. Vincent's Medical Center was the first hospital in Connecticut to receive back-to-back "accreditation with commendation" and was recognized as a "Top 100" Heart Hospital by an independent national survey group. During his career, Riordan was presented with numerous awards, including an honorary degree from Sacred Heart University and a leadership award from the Daughters of Charity. To the Riordan family,
While I did not have day to day contact with Bill Riordan, I did work at St. Vincent's and admired the way he treated each employee and knew them by name. He would stop and have conversations even though his day was very busy. When my mother passed away, he took the time to write me a letter of condolence. I will never forget that.
My deepest sympathy to the family.

Mrs. Riordan and family,

It was with profound sadness that I learned about Bill's passing. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to do my Administrative Residency at St. Vincent's under Bill's mentorship in 1976-1977,shortly after the new hospital was open. I learned many valuable lessons from Bill that have served me well throughout my career and I have shared those lessons with many young administrators whom I've had the opportunity to mentor over the years. Bill gave me a solid foundation for my career and helped me with advice and job search support long after my Residency was completed. For that I am forever grateful. Barb and I will lift you up in our prayers. Please accept our heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Mrs. Riordan, I was so saddened to hear today of Mr. Riordan passing. I have great memories of visiting with you both back in the day at the "Restaurant" but more importantly, I could never thank you both enough for the wonderful afternoon spent at your house in Clinton in between my Wedding ceremony and reception taking photos at your beautiful home. Every time I look at my wedding album from 1999 I think of you both! I am so sorry for your loss! He was a wonderful, kind and generous man. I will keep you in my prayers. Sincerly, Amie

I had the privilege of working with Bill in 1985 when we began the Outreach program for the Elderly and Homeless;and again from 1987 until 1998 . Under his leadership we developed all of the then known Community Medicine Programs for the underserved in the greater Bridgeport area. I loved every moment working with the poor alongside the Daughters of Charity and Bill.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Riordan family.

Roberta and family,

I miss Bill so much. I will forever be thankful that I had the opportunity to work for him, though it was a short time, it was such a blessing for me. I'll always miss the great conversations we had. He made me laugh and I hope that I made him laugh a little. He was always thankful and appreciative for what I did for him and that makes all the difference. What a gracious man he was. I looked forward to going to work every day and I will surely miss that. He was one of the nicest people I've ever known. My love and prayers to you and your family. God Bless You.

Love,

Sandy B.

Mrs. Riordan and family
I had the pleasure of working alongside your husband/dad for 10 of my 28 years at St Vincent's. I always admired the time he took to know each employees name and how he would always spend a few minutes chatting with them whenever his time allowed. Under his direction the medical center was a family, and a great place to work. I will always cherish the time I had to work alongside him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy on his passing.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Riordan family. Reading his life work reminded me again at what an accomplished man he was... although I'll always remember him as Rob's dad.
