Back in the 1990s I had the honor to work with William Rosen. Bill was the editor (and much more) of my employer's books. Yesterday, whilst dusting bookshelves, I came across three of Will's splendid books. He wrote like a god, he was patient with ignorant souls like me and he contributed a great deal to American publishing and to the lives of those who had the opportunity to work with him. Respectfully, Dusa Gyllensvard

I chose The Third Horseman for my history book Report just because it seemed interesting and it sure was. I really enjoyed the deep and dark history had from his book and I wouldn't have known it without him. I wish there was more to learn about from this man.

An absolute genius. The Third Horseman is one of my most favorite books. I read it yearly. Mr. Rosen inspired me to become a writer of slave narratives and historical fiction. He helped change my life for the better and I stand in awe of his creative mind.

Was gutted to discover Mr Rosen had passed. Justinian's Flea inspired my dissertation on Climate Change and Migration in the Late Antique and Medieval Roman Empire. RIP.

What a brian he had - Marvellous! ..... Enlightened! .... A revolutionary of thought ..... and of accepted history .... Someone aptly qualified needs to produce an appropriate write-up on Wikipadia of Rosen's writings and thought processes and the impact that they have (or could prove to have in time) upon the subjects covered by him.

I just finished reading "Justinian's Flea" about a week ago. When I told others about that the book was about they would look at me kind of funny like it was an arcane intellectual incomprehensible subject. Mr. Rosen's writing made it anything but. I cannot remember being as excited reading a book. Mr. Rosen's prose and knitting together of disparate events and ideas were such a pleasure to read. I was going to send him a note to thank him when I happened upon his obituary. Thank you Mr. Rosen and rest in peace.

Bill Rosen commissioned my book when he was at Free Press back in 2003. He was a wonderful editor as well as a delightful and fascinating person with whom to spent time. As an Englishman, I am long used to drinking a glass of wine at lunch in restaurants. Bill was one of the few NY publishers who didn't swallow deeply and say, Are you an alcoholic?! He left the Free Press before I finished the book; it was never the same afterwards. He really is an enormous loss as a writer, an editor and, above all, a really fine person.

Bill Rosen took a chance, hiring me as a young editor at Macmillan many years ago when I had very little experience. He was my ideal of the perfect boss, smart, funny, incisive, fair, got involved when he needed to but otherwise trusted you to do your job well. He gave you the space to grow, and he genuinely cared about the people who worked for him. Through my own career, I've tried to pay that forward. We fell out of touch after Macmillan was sold, but it was with absolute delight that I saw him so beautifully one-up Jon Stewart on The Daily Show--and you could tell Stewart was delighted as well. What a pleasure--that moment was such a pure expression of Bill. Jeanine, I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and my very deepest condolences are with you and the children. Bill was a very special man, and I'll remember him always with the greatest fondness and gratitude.

As a young assistant editor, I was in awe of Bill. He was always the smartest person in the room and understood all the angles to any project; I learned more about the publishing business from Bill than from anyone else.
But even more important, Bill was unfailingly generous with his time and his knowledge and his passion, a true mentor and friend.
I'll miss you, Bill, and our regular rendezvous in Princeton! Rest in peace.
My condolences,
Andrea

Bill was as brilliant as he was loving. He will always have a spot on our 3rd floor where he spent many a night, while visiting Quillan at Wellesley College. Our kids will never forget his LONG stories and warm heart, and we will think of him every day, especially when watching Jeopardy, as we know he would have won it all on that show. He took John Stewart on and had more than a few minutes of FAME on John's tv show.
Like his cousin Scott, he died too young, and we all will carry in our hearts the brilliance and love we were lucky enough to receive,

Bill was my first COUSIN, my mom's brother's son, and he was also my first CRUSH. I had good taste even as a very young girl.
RIP Billy, you will always be loved.

Bill is best remembered for his calm and friendly mannerism.
It has been heart wrenching for the family as we witnessed the pain and suffering he went through during his last days. May he now rest in peace.
We will never forget him and his spirit lives on in our hearts.
