William Sandman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2005.
Funeral services celebrating the life of William H. Sandman Sr., 63, Davenport, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2005, in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday.
Bill died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family.
William Herman Sandman was born April 1, 1941, in Davenport, the son of Ernest August and Gladys Marie (Pryor) Sandman in Davenport. On September 12, 1964, he married Lorretta C. Schmell in Davenport. He served our country proudly in the U.S. Army Reserves. Bill retired in 2001 from Linwood Mining & Mineral after 20 years at the Lime Plant. He had previously owned Bill's Automotive Repair, Davenport, and the Blue Grass DX.
Bill's passion for cars led him to the USAC racing circuit, where he was a mechanic for several successful racing teams, including Ray Cox and Terry Ryan. He competed in the Novice division of USAC and was a regular at all the area racetracks. He was an avid NASCAR fan and also enjoyed fishing, but his greatest joy in life came from being with his family.
Memorials may be left to the family.
Survivors include his wife, Lorretta Sandman; sons, William H. "Will" Sandman Jr. and Teri Marxen, and Ray Sandman, all of Davenport; two grandchildren, Bailey and Ryan Sandman, both of Davenport; his step-grandchildren, Tony Pacunas, Emily Pacunas and Nathan Steen; two brothers, including his twin brother, Art (MarySue) Sandman, Milan, Ill., and Robert Sandman, Bettendorf; a sister, Linda (Jim) Hergert, Blue Grass, Iowa; as well as his best friend, Dean Lawton, Davenport, and a loyal and faithful companion, "Kama."
His parents, sister-in-law, Shirley Sandman, and previous loyal and faithful companion, "Dusty," preceded him in death.
