William Clark "Bill" Shepherd

Shepherd, William Clark "Bill" July 24, 1938 August 24, 2018 Whether you knew him as "Mr. Shepherd", "Coach Shepherd", "Bill", "Papa", or just simply as "Dad", Bill Shepherd was a remarkable man. His kindness, engagement, intelligence, determination and commitment to making the world a better place will be deeply missed. After battling Parkinson's disease for more than two decades, Bill passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, August 24th. Born in San Francisco, Bill grew up in San Anselmo, California. After serving in the Navy, Bill entered the University of California at Berkeley where he later graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. While still attending Cal, Bill met Sandra Harper, and in 1961 Bill and Sandy were married. Their marriage spanned the next 57 years. Bill & Sandy moved to Orange County in 1963 where Bill joined Ford Aeronutronic in Newport. In 1966 Bill Shepherd joined Allergan Pharmaceuticals as a chemist and would spend the next 31 years with the company until his retirement in 1997. Starting as a research chemist in the eye-care company's R&D labs, Bill later became President, then CEO and Chairman of the Board for Allergan Inc. Always the avid outdoorsman, Bill loved both the sea and the mountains. Many summers Bill could be found on mooring "Lima 1" at Catalina Island's Two Harbors with Sandy aboard their beloved boat Hallelujah. Bill developed an early passion for the Sierra Nevada Mountains and would spend many years backpacking, fishing, and camping in and around Lake Tahoe. Bill is survived by his wife Sandy, brothers Don and Jack, children Steve, Amy, and Scott, and grandchildren Morgan Katz, Nicholas Katz, Will Shepherd and Claire Shepherd. A memorial service for Bill will be held at Noon Friday, September 28th, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian in Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Bill's memory.
