William Shettle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2024.
REHOBOTH BEACH, DE - William Martin Shettle II, 85, owner of historic Beverly Farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Pocomoke City, died peacefully August 11, 2024, at his summer home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Mr. Shettle was born August 3, 1939, in New York City, to parents Emily McLean Shettle and Arthur Ferman Shettle, himself the son of celebrated artist William Martin Shettle, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mr. Shettle was educated at the St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At university, Mr. Shettle was a standout athlete as both a varsity tennis and soccer player. He would go on to be an accomplished competitor in, and diehard fan of, many racquet sports throughout his life, including competing internationally in court tennis and becoming an early pickleball enthusiast. Professionally, Mr. Shettle was a successful investment manager, initially with the First Pennsylvania Bank, and later as founder and president of a private investment firm, Philadelphia Investment Management Group, which he ran for nearly forty years.

Mr. Shettle's life revolved around his love for his family and his family estate, Beverly, an historically significant property built in 1774 and purchased by his parents in 1936. Mr. Shettle spent his life lovingly restoring the old property, making it a home for the generations to follow.

Mr. Shettle was an avid boater, an accomplished pilot, an animal lover, and a witty person who left a lasting mark on those he met. Mr. Shettle engaged and entertained countless individuals through his storytelling, which centered around the vastness of his life experiences. Through his eclectic interests and hobbies, as well as his fun-loving and magnetic personality, he cultivated a deep network of friends spanning generations and geographies.

Mr. Shettle is survived by his wife of 44 years, Renee Wellford Shettle, and his four children, daughters Ann Shettle Hansen, Natalie Shettle Herter, and Caroline Shettle Cullen; and his son, Arthur Ferman Shettle II. Mr. Shettle is also survived by his sister, Sandra Wellford King, nephew George Martin Shettle, and nine grandchildren.

Taking all of us litte turds out on the boat tubing. It was the first time that I had ever been on a tube before with my friends and his daughter. What a wonderful man... generous as hell, sharp as a tax and knew more than most about just about anything. If he didn´t, he could sure as heck figure it out.

We enjoyed meeting him a few years ago when we were researching my husband's family roots. He is descended from the Dennis family who built Beverly mansion. He graciously gave us a tour of the grounds.

Bill Shettle and Peter Clement after winning the US Court Tennis doubles title in 1976.
Bill and I won many Whitney Cup team matches for the RCOP
for over 15 years at Green Tree on Long Island. He was a tennis, squash and pickle ball player in addition to a court tennis champion. I will always remember his passion and sportsmanship in
the many matches we
played together. His top spin winners to the
dedans and retrieving were second to none.
He served on the
USCTA as treasurer for
many years.
His love of flying enabled us to fly to Aiken, SC, Newport and Boston tournaments. One time we returned north to his beloved "Beverly" in Pocomoke, Md. from South Carolina, flying in his single engine plane along the coast line at 100 feet above the ocean. My white knuckles took days to recover.

My sincerest sympathy to Renee and the family.

My thoughts are with the Shettle family. Mr. Shettle was a legend at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. May he continue to beat those chases and may his memory be a blessing.
