William E. Smith

VINELAND New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Vineland - William E. Smith, Jr., 97, passed away Thursday, October 6. Born in Ewing, he was a lifelong area resident. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 29, 1943, and not long after was fighting in the European theater. He landed with the 2nd Infantry Division at Omaha Beach on 7 June 44 and was severely wounded in a subsequent battle 6 days later. Bill was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Western Europe Campaign and Normandy Campaign ribbons, among others. Predeceased by; his parents William, Sr., and Miriam Smith; his brothers James, Sr., Robert, Lester and Kenneth; and his sisters Charlotte, Norma and Dorothy; he is survived by: his siblings Thomas (Delores Newton) Smith, Mary "Betty" (Bob) Brenner, John (Barbara) Smith, and Frank (Donna) Smith; his sisters-in-law Carolyn Smith and Florence Smith; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-greats. His viewing will take place Thursday, October 20th from 10-11am at the Murphy Funeral Home, 1863 Hamilton Avenue, Hamilton 08619. The funeral service will follow at 11am at the funeral home. The burial will take place at 1pm at the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. The cemetery does not accept flowers.
