William Sturgill II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2024.
William Bartram Sturgill II, husband of Hillary Woods Sturgill, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2024 following a lengthy illness.

William was born on January 10, 1983 in Lexington, Kentucky to Paul Jennings Sturgill and Tobey Stilz Sturgill. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Payton Sturgill, mother Tobey Sturgill, sisters Eloise (Matt) Wooden and Jennings (Patrick) McClure and brother Kenton (Lindsey) Sturgill, in addition to a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Sturgill and his grandparents, William and Eloise Sturgill and Robert and Mildred Stilz.

William was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, where he was a member of the football team. He received his undergraduate degree from Hanover College, where he was a member of the football team, as well as, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He went on to receive his MBA from Queens College in Charlotte, NC. William started his career in Lexington at Central Rock Mineral Company and went on to have an exciting and impactful career in motorsports. He served as a pit crew member for multiple NASCAR teams and held various roles within the business side of the sport. William eventually went on to be the Director of Motorsports for Axalta (Philadelphia, PA). He was later transferred to the Dallas, Texas area.

William was a man's man. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. None of these things compared to his love for his family. William was known for always stepping in to lend a helping hand, always listening and giving the greatest bear hugs. His family will forever be sharing memories and making new memories that honor him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

This is hard to wrap my head around. Will, Double LL was a great guy who gave great bear hugs! When I was stranded at the hospital in Charlotte he was the one who came and picked me up at almost midnight! He will be greatly missed!

I met William soon after entering the NASCAR industry through our mutual friend, Mike Laheta. William was one of the kindest, most welcoming, and friendliest faces in the garage. Each time you saw William he was always so positive, warm, and engaging. Wanting to know if/how he could help you. I´m so sorry to hear of his passing. While I didn´t know his family, they have my deepest sympathies and condolences.

William and I worked at Axalta together. Every time I saw William he always had a great big smile on his face. I surly will miss that. I took customers to the Daytona 500 for several years. William always took such great care of us helping with logistics and hospitality. God bless Hillary and Peyton and may the lord watch over you in your time of Sarrow.
