William Webber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2014.
William Temple Webber passed away on Thursday, the 24th of July, at Methodist Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Texarkana, Arkansas, on the 3rd of October, 1931, he grew up on the Texas side of State Line Boulevard. He graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut before attending Washington & Lee University, where he was a member of the golf team and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Temple met Barbara Chase while studying at W&L. The two married in 1954 and just recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. They moved to Houston to raise a family, and Temple became involved in banking, first with Texas National Bank and then with Old Southern National Bank. He was a very active member of the community over the years, serving on several non-profit boards including M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. He was a member of Allegro, River Oaks Country Club, and The Bayou Club. Few things thrilled Temple more than going to horse races with his wife Barbara. Whether in Houston, The Fairgrounds in New Orleans, or Del Mar Race Track in California, he enjoyed the world of thoroughbred racing immensely. He successfully owned horses for over 30 years, competing in all manner of races from claiming to stakes. However, he was most proud of the accomplishments of the horses that he raced in partnership with his friends. Temple was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Asa Love and William Temple Webber; and his son, Christopher Wheeler Webber. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, W. Temple Webber III and his wife, Mary, Dianne Chase Webber, David Falconer Webber and his wife, Janna. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: William Temple Webber IV, Sarah Chase Webber, John Stedwell Webber, Christopher Charles Webber, Christopher Wheeler Webber, Andrew Falconer Webber, and Mitchell Keenan Webber. The family would like to thank his long-time assistant, Michelle Rios, and Drs. Emily and Colin Barker for their extraordinary care. A memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock this afternoon, Tuesday, the 29th of July, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where the Rev. Dr. Russell Levinson is to officiate. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to either the Texas Children's Hospital (Attn: Virginia Thomlinson), Bayou Bend Gardens and Endowment, or to the charity of your choice.
