PEKIN - William Franklin Whitacre, 88, of 2514 Sharon Ave. passed away at 9:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Pekin Hospital.
He was born July 30, 1920, in South Pekin to George D. and Edna Ella (Flick) Whitacre. He married Marian Barney on Oct. 24, 1948, in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are one half sister, Mary Davis of Bartonville; one half brother, Brian Flick; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
William enlisted in the United States Army on June 21, 1939, and received an honorable discharge on July 14, 1945.
He was later employed at Commonwealth Edison Company for a short time.
He graduated from the Peoria Barber College in October 1951.
He joined the United States Navy Reserves in 1950 and served until 1976.
He worked in the printing department at Keystone Steel & Wire Co. in Bartonville from 1949 until retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the Keystone Retirees Club and the Commerce Bank Senior Partners.
He loved pets and riding sports cars and motorcycles.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Michael K. Roberts will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery in rural Pekin. Military rites will be provided by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team and the U.S. Navy.
