O Brother,
a lament
the day I learned my brother died
was told he was too weak to lift a phone
to say goodbye to say I love you
from his deathbed fist clenched to heart
I thought of all the words I meant to say
miss wish why wonder regret
reasoned we sailed different waters
lacking a paddle of words to carry us
to each other’s distanced shores
miss wish why wonder regret
looked back at the towheaded boy
myself in cowgirl garb on three wheels
sailing the block’s past cold water flats
orthodox chants corner bars and brawls
schoolhouse where we would grin and wink
across a stretch of hall as morning doors closed
on his 1-2-3’s a-b-c’s my memorized rhymes
miss wish why wonder regret
the day I learned my brother died
I did not cry and would not speak
to him to god to distanced angels
we believed wrapped wings round us
left to grieve grief a ragged companion
no comfort at my side O brother
O brother of primordial dust
miss wish why wonder regret

From my family to yours. You have our deepest sympathy for the loss of your loved one. A life lost is a memory found. Hold on to these, good memories of your loved one. One day we will see them again in perfect health and peace (John 3:16 and John 17:3). Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.
