Three words come to mind about my Great Uncle Willie, "what a character."
I sometimes stayed with him and my Aunt Ethel as a child. I only remember seeing him wear overhauls.
The two of them would argue politics. He was hard core Democrat, and gave his opinions from his favorite recliner. She leaned toward Republican, and countered his arguments from her perch on the end of the couch.
Politics weren't their only disagreement. Daddy once told me they were getting prank phone calls, and Uncle Willie bought a whistle to blow into the phone. When Aunt Ethel had to call him to pick her up from a doctor's appointment, he didn't even wait to see who was on the phone. He just started blowing in her ear.
Believe it or not, they were married for more than 60 years. They put all their children through college.
I remember after Aunt Ethel died, Daddy and I went to visit Uncle Willie in the nursing home. His hearing was bad, and sometimes, his memory was not so good. He often worried his sons would sell his home behind his back, but of course, they never would do that. That visit, Uncle Willie asked Daddy if he had a shotgun. Daddy said he did. Uncle Willie said, "If you'd let me borrow it, I believe I'd be alright at home."

Doy, I am sorry about the loss of your loved one. You probably don't remember me, but you taught me algebra at Russellville in 1967.
