Wilma Crofford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2015.
Wilma Lorene (MacFarlane) Crofford
September 5, 1913 – May 24, 2015

Wilma L. Crofford, formerly of Longmont, CO, left this earth with the love of many family and friends to join her dear ones in Heaven on Sunday May 24, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living, in Littleton, CO. She was 101 years old! She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Wilma was born at her parents' home on September 5, 1913 in Fairfield, NE to Achsa Jane Wisner MacFarlane and John Alexander MacFarlane. She had two older sisters, Erva Margaret and Alta LaVon. The family moved to Kuhns Crossing, North of Simla, CO in 1918.

She married the love of her life, Freeman Barry Robert Crofford on December 29, 1933 at her parents' home. They continued to live with her parents in order for Wilma to care for her ailing mother. Theirs was a devoted, loving life-partnership, until his death in 1999, marking nearly 66 years of wedded bliss.
They moved to Littleton, CO in 1934, where they lived until 1936. After a short stay in Denver, CO, they purchased their first home in Lakewood, CO, February, 1937, where they lived and raised their two daughters, Joyce and Elaine, until 1960. From 1960-1984, they lived in Wheat Ridge, CO. For the next year, they lived/played in their motorhome. From August 24, 1985 – December 2014, they enjoyed retirement in their beloved home in Longmont, CO.

During WW II, while her husband was serving in the Marine Corps, in 1944 Wilma worked at Remington Arms Plant running a nail machine for ammunition boxes. In 1953, she worked for Singer Sewing Company as an accountant. In 1954, she began her career working for Jefferson County Public Schools Admin. until she retired in 1975 as Acting Director of Accounting.

Wilma was a hard-working, warm-loving, devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She and 'Bob' enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing trips, family vacations, and especially their after-retirement-adventures in their motorhome.

Wilma served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, was an active member of her church, a faithful participant in her water aerobics class, enjoyed gardening, cooking, compiling photo albums, sewing, many family travels, adventures, parties, holidays, and especially the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies!
She is survived, and will be deeply missed, by her 2 daughters, Joyce (Dick) Lazzeri, Elaine Fowler, 6 Grandsons, 13 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends/neighbors with whom she shared all her love and kindness and among whom she was always admired and will be remembered dearly.

Funeral services, where her life will be celebrated, will be conducted by Rev. Sandy Stewart at 12:00 noon, on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Crown Hill Mortuary's Chapel of Peace, 7777 West 29th Ave. (entrance is West off Wadsworth Blvd), Wheat Ridge, CO; interment will follow at the Crown Hill Cemetery.

In the spirit of Wilma's generosity, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the OUR Center, 250 3rd Ave., Longmont, CO 80501, Longs Peak United Methodist Church, 1421 Elmhurst Drive, Longmont, CO 80503, or to the charity of choice.

I can't remember not knowing Wilma (and Bob). They were friends of my parents and had many many pinochle games and trips to the mountains and cooking over the campfire with my family. She was/is a dear, sweet, loving soul. My admiration and thanks to Joyce and Elaine for all they did for her for so long.

I had the wonderful privilege of knowing and caring for Wilma as one of her caregivers for several months where we became very good friends. She will forever be in my thoughts and I will greatly miss her. She was an amazing woman and will always be my favorite! Let your bright light shine my angel.

Many thanks first of all to Elaine Fowler for being so thoughtful to remember to call and inform me. I only had the privilege of meeting with Wilma and Free for a few short visits but felt that I knew them so well through my own fathers (Jack Andrews) memories of life with them. Wilma was the most kind thoughtful person that I've had the pleasure to know. She will be sorely missed by all those who loved her but its definitely time for her to reunite with Free. Even in my limited contact with Wilma I knew how much she missed him. I do feel so lucky to have had them both in my life and know my father considered them his adopted parents.

I had the opportunity to meet Wilma and her family while being a personal care provider my first year in Colorado. I had the opportunity to meet such a warm, strong minded women who took me back to her experiences and travels in life. She was a inspiration on her will to thrive and let God's will be her guide. I was at her 101st birthday celebrating with friends and family. Amazing lady that enjoyed being around people she loved and loved her. She wanted to go to heaven and now she is home. She made an impact in my life and the special girls that shared her well being. She rests now--Thank you Elaine and Joyce for letting me into her home God Bless you all
