Winifred LASOVICH Obituary

Published by Victoria Times-Colonist on Nov. 18, 2011.
LASOVICH, Winifred (Fred) Kathleen Passed away peacefully at home November 6, 2011, at age 45. Gone in a heartbeat, she leaves behind a huge circle of family and friends who adored her. Born in Port Colborne, Ontario, the youngest daughter of Steve and Isabel (Clinton), she will be sadly missed by her brothers and sisters James, Mary, Jane (Roger), Nora, Bill, Sally (Roy) and Patty Ross, and nephews and nieces Paul, Kyle, Zain, Carter, Sarah and Lindsay. Employed as a server at the Empress Hotel since May 1990, Fred served at banquets for royalty and at high school graduations with equal warmth and impeccable courtesy. She treated everyone she met with dignity, never caring about how someone might look from the outside or what they might have or lack. She'd be the first to say she was no saint, but she'd get quite an argument from those of us who know better. Fred lived the golden rule of treating others as you would want to be treated yourself. She was also an accomplished pianist who played every genre at her baby grand, classical to country, Joni to the Beatles. She loved concerts, none better than Elton John's performance in Victoria last winter, where she was enraptured from the first note, her eyes sparkling behind oversized glasses, her Yellow Brick Road LP waving overhead. That capacity for sheer joy drew people to Fred, along with her boundless generosity to anyone in need. She was unfailing in her kindness and showed every day what it can mean to live and love with an unusually enlarged heart. Cremation has taken place and Fred's ashes will be scattered at places on Vancouver Island that were special to her. In lieu of flowers, you are encouraged to undertake your own act of kindness and generosity in her honour. A public celebration of Fred's life will take place November 26 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Crystal ballroom of the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria. 642759

To everyone who has left a message, I want to thank you and let you know that I'm comforted by hearing, again and again, how much Fred was loved and is missed. Every day is a bit of sadness because I can't drop by her apartment for a yak and a beer after work, or pick up the phone, or go grocery shopping, just the ordinary stuff. We are just all so lucky to have had her in our lives, my wonderful kid sister.

1991 This picture captures Winifred as we will always remember her. She was forever spreading laugter and cheer to all people around her. No matter what walk of life you came from she was always kind and made you feel comfortable. We will also remember her for her witty humour. Being around her made you feel happy inside. She was the type of friend that if you lost contact with her for awhile you could call her and your friendship would pick up right where it left off.

I was shocked and saddened upon hearing of Winifred's passing. We were good friends in high school. Many great stories of my youth I have shared over the years have starred Winifred. She will be missed.

sending my deepest heart felt sympathy to the lasovich family. I grew up with Winifred just across the street and she was my dear childhood friend. I spent many times at her home playing monopoly and making christmas cookies with her and mom Isabel..so many fond memories and I will always treasure them. They were like family to me and winifred was a very kind and wonderful person. I am so glad to have known her and her family. I know you are suffering in sadness and my heart goes out to all of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love Brooke (Garner)

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Fred just days before her passing. What a truly beautiful, kind and warm soul! I was lucky enough to hear her amazing talent as she shared a song while she played piano... My heart breaks for all her family and friends as they struggle during this most difficult time. Special hugs go out to Patty. Fred will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and I know she will be watching over her loved ones. I am so thankful for the events of the evening, that allowed me to spend the time and really get to see what a truly wonderful lady Fred was. Love and Hugs Kym Rumney (Prince George, BC)
