Mrs. Winnie Wong

Winnifred "Winnie" Wong went home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2017
surrounded in the embraces of many loved ones. She is survived by seven children,
Amelia, Adrian (Maria), Angus (Elinna), Alexander, Arlene (Anthony), Alan (Jeanette)
and Alisa (Brian); and ten grandchildren, Sterling (Jasmine), Spencer, Andrew, Adriel
(John), Anthony Michael, Mark, Mackenzie, Meighen, Amanda, and Madison. She was
predeceased by late husband, Quon Hipp Wong, and her four siblings, Harry, Jennie,
Ronald and Bill.
Winnie was born the second of five children to John and Ada Con on January 6,
1924. At the tender age of three she moved to China in order to receive a Chinese
education as well as to spend time with her grandmother and extended family. Returning
to Vancouver at age 11, Winnie attended Lord Strathcona Elementary School. It was
perhaps this experience that informed her desire later in life to become a teacher at Wah
Kiu Chinese Public School in Chinatown. Her reputation was of a strict, yet kind and
compassionate educator who was committed to teaching her students well. On August
4, 1945, Winnie married the love of her life, Quon, embarking a 38-year long partnership
of devotion and fun.
Winnie and Quon enjoyed showing hospitality to everyone whether family, long
time friends or new acquaintances. Together, they enjoyed exploring different cultures
and travelled around the world many times. With great enthusiasm, she often spoke of
her treasured lifetime experiences. Some favourites include the time she and Quon were
nearly marooned in Israel due to rumours of war, and her many trips to Hong Kong.
Winnie loved God and was active in the Chinese Presbyterian Church as a
member, as the president of the Women's Missionary Society as well as an Elder in the
Session. During this time, she assisted CPC's move from its former location in
Chinatown to its current Oakridge location. She was also a director of True Light (Jen
Kwong) Chinese School. Winnie and Quon were founding members of the Chinese
Cultural Centre and active in the Wong's Benevolent Association.
The Wong family expresses immense appreciation for all of the kind friends and
extended family members who have enriched our lives through community over the
years, whether in the form of countless prayers or the shared quality time. We would like
to extend a special thanks to Winnie's physicians, caregivers and the staff at St.
Vincent's Langara. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in Winnie's memory can be made to the
Chinese Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your preference.
