Winnifred Clapp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 24, 2007.
DENNISPORT — Winnifred Howes (Edwards) Clapp, of Dennisport, died on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich, after a short illness. She was 85.

She is survived by her husband, Leighton Clapp Jr., with whom she recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Eleanor Edwards, also of Dennisport.

Mrs. Clapp was born in Boston and grew up in Winthrop. She graduated from Milton High School in 1939. After high school, she attended Hickock Secretarial School in Boston and worked for a short time with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Thereafter, she became the manager of the book room and post office at Milton Academy.

After her marriage in 1947, she moved with her husband to Hanover, where they lived for more than 30 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and was a member of the Book Club and the Couples Club of the church.

An avid reader of historical novels and animal stories, she was very proficient in the art of crochet, having created numerous items for family and friends. She also loved the beach, spending her summers at the Cape. She would often spend hours swimming slowly back and forth along the shoreline.

Mrs. Clapp and her husband retired to the Cape in 1986. She loved working in the yard and woods surrounding their home, and enjoying her grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her Cape Cod heritage, having direct linkage to the Edwards and Howes family tree. The homestead of her grandfather, Andrew Edwards, still exists and is currently occupied by her son.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Clapp is also survived by her son, David Clapp and his wife Susan of Chelmsford, and her grandchildren, Stephanie and Kimberly Clapp, also of Chelmsford.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service to be held on Monday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m., at Swan Lake Cemetery, Depot Street, Dennisport. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to The First Congregational Church, Music Fund, 515 Hanover St., Hanover, MA 02339.

I was sorry to hear of Winnie's passing. I grew up down the street from your family (I am the daughter of Herbert and Marilyn Simmons) and remember you all fondly from First Congregational Church. It is hard to lose a mother and wife, may you find peace in your memories.
