WINSTON REKERT Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Oct. 13, 2012.
REKERT, Winston Houghton
June 10, 1949 - September 14, 2012
To many Winston was a devoted artist; an actor, producer, director, writer and charismatic performer. To some he was a teacher, mentor and sponsor. To those who knew him closely he was a playful musician, talented wood carver and lover of animals. To his family he was a loving husband, brother and unique father. In the last four years some knew him as a patient and a fighter. Yet to Winston, cancer wasn't a battle. It was a blessing. Through profound courage and his invincible sense of humor, he was able to see his illness as an opportunity to live and love even more passionately and cherish the love around him. Winston passed peacefully on September 14, 2012 with a smile on his face that never left. His life and legacy are an example of how to live and how to die. He will remain in the hearts of those dearest to him: his wife Lidija, her daughter Sara, his son Dylan and fiancé Meryl, his son Carson and their mother Pat. Winston's career accomplishments have been recognized by 2 Lifetime Achievement Awards, 2 Gemini Awards plus 9 Gemini nominations and a BC Entertainment Hall of Fame Star on Granville Street. After a successful career in the theatre he had roles in many films as well as starring roles in the TV series "Adderly" and "Neon Rider". To many, his presence and spirit lives on. A Memorial Fund will be established in Winston's name to benefit those in the theatre arts. As a New Zealand fan from way back, I recently rewatched all the `Neon Rider´ episodes that I had enjoyed back in the 1990s. I loved watching Mr Rekert as Dr Michael Terry in the series and knew he was a talented actor who had a real passion for his craft. I loved how the characters on the show interacted with each other. And I loved his big smile. I am sorry that I will never have the opportunity to meet Mr Rekert or write to him, and my condolences (although 12 years have passed) to his family. I may even rewatch the `Neon Rider´ episodes to catch up on Michael, Vic, Pin, Rachel, John, Fox, CC and more recently Eleanor. I recently was in Vancouver (10 years since my last visit - my first visit was 1986). I always enjoy the city. My thoughts to his family and to all his fans. Janet Lord

It was only two weeks ago that I found out about Winston passing away back in 2012.
I fell head over heels for him in his t.v. late night show Adderly in 1986. I was just starting FCC and it was scary to me but watching Winston brought great comfort into my life.
I wrote to him and he sent me back a personally autographed photo of himself! He didn't have to but that was and is the kind hearted and genuine loving person he truly was.
I am so terribly deeply saddened by such a gracious and loving and caring person passing away.
My heartfelt, condolences and love goes out to his family, friends and fans.
God Bless You Winston and Keep You Safe Til We All See Each Other Again, Amen

The episode of Neon Rider when he played himself in a celebrity baseball game (Safe At Home S4ep3) was the best. He was able to make fun of himself with such style and ease. He honestly sounded let down when he found out that "Winston Rekert" was playing in the game. Brilliant.

Wow, I was watching a movie Mr. Rekert was in and I remembered him from a TV show I used to watch. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I thought he was a very funny as well as handsome. I pray his family is doing well. Remember you never have closure in death, grieving is all about how long it takes you and know it will get better. God Bless from a widow since 2001.

I was a big fan of Neon Rider and Winston Rekert. I only just found out that he had passed away. Too many beautiful souls are lost to that ugly demon cancer. Go bravely into the next world, fallen soldier.

I first met Winston when I was printing t-shirts for a lot of the theatre productions in Vancouver and he was in "Cruel Tears" at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse. We crossed paths occasionally over the years. We had lunch together in Toronto a very long time ago a short time before I left to tour the world as a professional skater, and he carried on to the wonderful work that he became so well loved for. I regret few thing; however, not stopping by to say hi once in a while over the years is one of the big ones. I've always looked to Winston as a great inspiration, and wonderful example of how well a kid from Vancouver could do.

Winston was a great inspiration to me during a very vulnerable time and continues to inspire. His work on Neon Rider gave me much encouragement personally and also as a Canadian interested in theatre and film and arts and life! I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tell him in writing how he inspired and encouraged me and thank him. So kind- he thanked me in response and signed, yer friend, Win. Thankyou, Win. Much love always,

I am happy to see the guest book still open. I caught myself quoting some memerable lines from Adderly today at work and immediately thought of Winston. I recalled an old TV Guide article about the show, with Winston explaining how he had to learn to do things with one hand, like knotting a tie. I caught that scene in an episode. How clever...He used a filing cabinet! Regards to the family.

The first year anniversary is coming up of Winston's passing, i never met him but have crossed paths when he was filming neon rider, he was a rare actor that would've made me so nervous if i ever met him,i was a huge fan of Winston since Adderly, i always wanted to meet him but unfortunately god takes the kind and when i found out last year he was gone it was a shocker. i have a picture of Winston i bought from his Adderly days i will cherish always for a man who was kind hearted. god bless his family, i know in spirit he is with you.

Having received a message from Patricia Rekert via this site, I wondered how to proceed. It might seem discourteous to Winston's memory but this is not the intention - I've no other way of saying, Patricia, that if you would like me to send you the results of my family searches, please forward an e-mail address.

Meanwhile, we may bless Winston for bringing us in touch.

I have no memories of Winston - am but a very distant relative; but I've recently been lucky enough to trace a family I never knew I had (all over Canada). I still have a letter on my computer that I was planning to send to BC. Winston would have been a sort of cousin...My father, Reginald Stewart Rekert was the brother of Harry, Winston's father.

I can't, then, offer real condolences to Winston's family but, in my case, merely knowing that there is a solid, flourishing line of Rekerts still on the planet, I can truly say that 'No man is an island'. Indeed, one of the first tributes on this site was sent frm Lynette Zirk, a half-niece of mine (!) who appraised me of Winston's death but yesterday.

To the family - my best wishes. Winston is not forgotten (even here, where I live, in France: and, of course, I have DVDs). I hope that you don't think that I'm writing out of turn.

Will always remember how kind Winston was to this "silly" fan, when myself and the pres. of his fan club were invited to the set of Neon Rider in the early 90s. I had such a "crush" on him, and yet he always sought me out when I would show up at one of his public appearances, and would make me feel so comfortable with his gorgeous, warm smile and twinkling eyes! Thank-you Winston for being the wonderful man you were, and always will be, in my heart! Go in Peace!

Never knew Winston as an actor. Knew him for the last several years. What a sincere, lovely human being. We often met in stillness. He had such a strong urge to live from and in love and he put his attention to remove anything in the way of that.

Have known Winston (Teenie) since he was 2 years old, and through his teen years when he was one of The Dinks. Many memories. Like the time he brought a bottle of malt whisky over to me at my son's birth for drinking when my son was 21. We changed our minds and drank it there and then in the kitchen. Much love to my 'other' brother and his family. Ed (and Diana) Schuldt, Spain
