Winton Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 11 to Feb. 15, 2003.
Jones Winton Jones died peacefully at his home on Sunday evening, February 9th of Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born in Minneapolis on October 31, 1924, the oldest child of Helen Winton Jones and Carl Waring Jones. He is survived by wife, Janet; children, Julie Becklund, Wendy Zehngebot (Lee), Carl Jones (Sandy), Helen Warren (Henry), Christopher Jones (Sheila); ten grandchildren and his brother, Waring. His sister, Thirza Jones Cleveland preceded him in death. Winton was in his senior year at The Blake School when he enlisted in the army. He served in World War II as a tank gunner in the Third Army, 778th Battalion, Company C, whose motto was "Ever Foremost"; which was typical of the way Winton lived. He was proud that he received his high school diploma while serving his country in Czechoslovakia. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949 with a BA in history, which continued to be an important life-long interest. He began his banking career at the 1st National Bank of Minneapolis in 1949 and later held several positions at other financial institutions. He purchased the North Shore State Bank in 1967, which became the Anchor Bank. Under his direction and leadership, the organization has grown to include five banks under a single holding company, Anchor Bancorp. Today the Anchor Bancorp Holding Company is the eighth largest Minnesota bank holding company. Winton had many interests and passions. He was a director of The Minnesota Orchestral Association, Treasurer for Congressman Clark MacGregor, a director of the United Fund (Community Chest). Member and Treasurer of St. David's Episcopal Church, member of the Society of Amateur Chefs and Ducks Unlimited among many other positions and involvements. He was the consummate collector, and encouraged this passion in others. He was a life-long learner, taking delight in reading and learning about many topics of personal interest that he loved to share. He was a generous man who will be missed by his family, colleagues and friends. Donations to the Print and Drawing Curatorial Council of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts or to the American Lung Association of Minnesota for the purpose of research, 490 Concordia Avenue, St. Paul, are suggested. A memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue, Minneapolis, on Saturday, February 15 at 10:30 AM. Parking is available for this service at the underground ramp entering off of 13th St., between Marquette Ave & Nicollet Mall. David Lee Funeral Home Wayzata 952-473-5577

Sorry I was out of town or I would have extended my sympathies in person. Winton was a special person in my life, we had many great conversations at the gas pumps. My prayers & sympathy to the Jones family.

From the "past" owner of Wayzata Amoco.

Winton truly knew the definition of the word "Friend". No wonder he had so many of them! The world is a little poorer for losing this great man. He will be missed.

Winton was a great boss the 4 years I was a teller at Anchor Bank. We had some terrific employee parties at the house and on the "Compass Rose" - many great memories of a great man. I'm sorry that we'll be out of town on Saturday. Know that the family is in my prayers. Winton will be missed. God Bless.

Wint was a blessing to me personally, and a "piece of gold" that our family cherished. They say that God only takes the good ones. He took one of the greatest home last Sunday. Our best thoughts are with Janet and the kids today and always.
