Wyatt Walker Obituary

Published by J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc. on Jan. 23, 2018.

The Reverend Dr. Wyatt T. Walker, 88, transitioned peacefully in his sleep in Chester, Virginia on January 23rd, 2018. Dr. Walker was one of the essential leaders of the civil rights movement.

Born in 1929 in Brockton, MA., Reverend Dr. Wyatt T Walker was the son of Rev. John Wise Walker and Maude Pinn. He was the 8th of 9 children. As a double graduate of Virginia Union University; B.S (chemistry and physics honors) and with a Masters of Divinity. He went on to obtain his Doctorate of Ministry from the Rochester Theological Center in NY. Walker was considered a lifelong scholar through his graduate studies and research at several international universities.

His ministry began as the pastor of the historic Gilfield Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA (1952-1960), and he concurrently served Mt.Level Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, VA. His initial advocacy for civil rights began when he was arrested at the Petersburg library for attempting to check out a book in the “whites only” section. This sparked library protests around the country. He and his wife were Freedom Riders who were jailed in Jackson, MS.

While both were seminary students, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recognized Walker’s abilities and organizing skills. Walker eventually was selected as Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) based in Atlanta, King’s chief of staff and a key strategist for the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. Dr. Walker built the SCLC into a national organization with chapters throughout the country. He wrote the blueprint for the 1963 campaign that desegregated Birmingham. It is noteworthy that the Letter from a Birmingham Jail was written from Dr.King’s cell on scraps of paper. Dr. Walker collected King’s notes upon his visits and then helped translate the manifesto for publication. He was a key organizer of the March on Washington. At the request of Mrs. Coretta King, he also organized and arranged Dr. King’s funeral.

In 1967, Walker became Chief Executive Minister of Canaan Baptist Church (Harlem, NY) where he served as pastor for 37 years before retiring as Pastor Emeritus in 2004. Under his leadership, Walker sponsored seven housing properties, including three senior housing developments.

Also, Walker was a world traveler visiting over 100 countries. He led international tours for his church, family, and friends. Reverend Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker loved life and people. Walker was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., a Paul Harris Fellow and a 33° Mason. He received scores of awards and honors over his lifetime.

In 2016, the University of Richmond established the Dr. and Mrs. Wyatt T Walker Collection of writings, sermons, photographs and other memorabilia soon to be shared with scholars, historians, and the general public.

Walker is survived by his wife of 67 years, Theresa Ann Walker, four children, Patrice Walker Powell, Wyatt T. Jr, Robert Charles, Earl Maurice, two granddaughters- Jachele Walker and Christina Powell, a sister Mary Holley, ten nieces and nephews, plus 27 great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Memorial Tribute will be held Friday, February 16, 2018,  6-8 P.M., and a Memorial Worship Service, Saturday, February 17, 2018, 12 NOON - 2 P.M., both to be held at Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry Street, Petersburg, Virginia.

Upon learning about the death of Wyatt Walker I was sad and joyful because he is at peace. I remember years ago Rev. Walker was a guest preacher at Messiah Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan in the 1980's. I remember him preaching and I thought what a giant of a man. I am thankful he has passed this way and made a great impact on humanity. He can now rest in the arms of his savior. My prayers are with Mrs. Walker and family. God bless, Rev. Earline Vaughn, Detroit, Michigan

My Grandmother was a devoted member of the Canaan Baptist Church since it was located on W.118 St.with Pastor Moore. When the church relocated to W.116 St., she was there to welcome Rev.Wyatt Tee. Whenever he travelled, she travelled. Wherever he spoke, she heard his words. I am sure she is overjoyed in welcoming him to his new home and allowing herself the full extent of comfort in hearing his words once again.
So please, take a moment to rejoice and smile, knowing, that the Rev.Wyatt Tee Walker can still pull an audience!

To the Family,

May your memories and your faith in God sustain you now and always.

I am so pleased that I had the occasion to meet him; the last time was at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Petersburg with my former pastor Rev. W.N. Blsnd, Jr. on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2009. (We had a discussion about his first name being "Wyatt" and "Wyatt" being my last name). I have a picture with him and another Delta soror that I will cherish forever.

To God be the Glory for the life and work of Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker!

To Miss Theresa and Family:
"Wyatt Tee" as he insisted we call him during the civil rights crusade in 1960, led the Movement, was an awesome Preacher, and a powerful Man of God. There were many challenges as we peacefully picketed and held sit-in protests at the Trailways Bus Terminal Restaurant, where many of us, including me, at age 14, were arrested and jailed. The day would start with a prayer, with emphasis always on non-violence; and the evening mass meetings, would end in song with "We Shall Overcome." Almost immediately following the arrests, the Bus Terminal integrated their lunch counter and restaurant; the other locations where we protested, mostly "Five and Dime" stores in downtown Petersburg, soon followed. The strategy that we would fill the jails with protesters had worked! Wyatt Tee was a Giant who stood with many other Pastors and Leaders in Petersburg; they all fought the good fight throughout their lifetimes! May he rest in peace. God Bless his Soul and his everlasting legacy!

To the family of Rev. Dr. Walker. Doc was instrumental in waking all of Petersburg up to the inequalities we bore in Petersburg in the 1950's. As a child of the 50's, my home was sparked when he tried to check out a book in our infamous library. We loved and respected his efforts and will never, ever forget it. Rest in Peace Doc.

Dr. Walker was my first pastor at Gillfield and left a lasting impression. His family lived in our neighborhood and it gave me a feeling of connectedness at a very young age, I had the opportunity to see him after his return to the area. It was one of God's blessings in my life. The family has my love and hugs during this season of transition.

Greatly admired and felt proud to have been in his presence. As my mother often said when speaking of Dr. Walker and his part in the Civil Rights Movement, "he was instrumental in fighting racism in Petersburg."

We truly thank Rev. Wyatt T. Walker for his valiant service to all of humanity. As a hero of the Civils Rights Movement in this nation, Rev. Walker applied his tremendous organizing abilities in the success of SCLC and the many mass protests that bought the wall of legal segregation tumbling down. Again we thank him for his courage, service and sacrifice for all of humanity.

One of the few pastors I respected. I'll always remember his not categorizing people and telling us, basically, not to be the straw that broke the camel's back, because you never know what someone has been through! May God grant him eternal rest.
