Yonel Nelson

With heavy hearts and enduring love, we remember Yonel Nelson - a pillar of strength, a man of grace, and a servant of God whose legacy will resonate for generations.

Born on June 2, 1945, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Julienne Valeus and Mercius Nelson, Yonel's life was defined by humility, perseverance, and vision. The youngest of his mother's children, he carried her love and honor with pride. At the age of 13, Yonel began shaping his world through masonry, later becoming a master artisan. His hands built not only structures but futures, including Haiti's international airport.

At 16, Yonel met his beloved Yollande, and their love became a lifelong covenant. Together, they forged a sacred union of over 52 years, raising eight children with discipline, warmth, and sacrifice. Yonel's commitment to his family was unwavering, taking him across borders-from Haiti to the U.S.-where he worked tirelessly to ensure a brighter future for them.

Though a man of few words, Yonel's actions spoke volumes. He served his community selflessly, often repairing churches and homes without seeking recognition-only to be of service. His life stood as a testament to the power of faith, the beauty of duty, and the strength found in fatherhood.

In his final years, Yonel faced the challenge of Alzheimer's with dignity, surrounded by the family he had once carried, now cradled in their love and care. He passed away on March 27, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Yonel is survived by his devoted wife, Yollande Saintristil Nelson, their eight children-Kenel, Magalie, Fritzner, Magdala, Jean David, Marie France, Stephanie, and Jessica-and his cherished grandchildren: Aaron, Aiden, Rebeca, Avery, Adonai, Jeremy & Jolie Charles, Yonel H., Yurie, Yanai, Yarah, Maverick & Emory Lawrence. He is also survived by his siblings: Marie Alourdes Charlemagne, Filius Nelson, Marie Eve Saint Surin, Claude Nelson, and Esthere Nelson, along with countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julienne Valeus & Mercius Nelson, and his siblings: Klebert, Frederick, Monac, David, and Josianne Jean Nelson.

A memorial service will be held on April 11, 2025, at 4 PM at Caribe Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service on April 12, at 8:30 AM at Gospel Crusade Church in Brooklyn. Interment will take place at Beth Israel Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, with a repast to follow at St. Demetrius Center in Woodbridge, NJ.

Yonel Nelson's journey was one of purpose, power, and presence. His spirit endures in the lives he touched, and his legacy will continue to lift others for generations to come.
