Yuet-Yuen Mak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 22 to May 23, 2006.
MAK, Yuet-Yuen Passed away May 20th, 2006 at the May Court Residence after a long valiant battle with cancer. Born in Hong Kong, April 8th, 1947, she worked as an elementary school teacher and Girl Guide Leader until she came to Canada in 1973 to study. In her last weeks, she was looked after at home by her fond cousin Esther of New York, friends, brothers and sisters from the church. Special thanks to the staff of the May Court Residence for the exceptional care and support given to Yuet-Yuen in her last days. She practised her faith and love of the Lord right up to the end to be with Him. The visitation will take place at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Saturday, May 27th, 2006 from 2 to 4 p.m., with Funeral Service to be held at 4 p.m. Interment of ashes (family only) will be by the Mississippi Lake in the countryside that she loved so much. I have only known Yuet-Yuen Mak for about six years after she had cancer. She came to our home in August 2000 with a common friend whom we have known for 32 years. Both of them were learning to sketch from my husband. At that time I was looking for an editor, God used Yuen to open the way. This was a very important chapter in my life -facilitated by Yuen. I always remember her and appreciate what she has done.

Yeun was a sincere person who valued God, life and relationships more than herself. She was my English student at CMHC and God made us friends thereafter to the hereafter. She will be always thoguht of fondly. I told her to reserve us a place in heaven beside her. 'To everything there is a purpose'and God's timing is not always our timing....

Let's also celebrate Yuen's life! She was a mischievous lady, good at giving nicknames, she called me Manager Lau 'Lau Ging Lei' cause my husband has a retail store, she also called another friend 'Owner xx', 'xx Lo Ban' cause that friend has a business. One time when I complained to her that my doctor was not giving me the quick and fast medication, she labelled me 'Instant Gratification Lady', 'Gup Gong Gun Lei', she always teased me with that name, well, for the last 10 years! I also remember that time at her apt., we 'tried' to help each other colour our hair, we were both newbies to hair colouring then, we had a great time! Yuen was a funny lady!!!

Suffering no more, weeping no more, no more sorrows shall you find. God's love and mercy are embracing; everlasting joy and peace are you enjoying now. Resting in the Heavenly Home, shall you shout joyfully "It Is Well" to be with Christ Jesus your Saviour, your Love One.

A Woman of the Beatitudes

For my friend, Yuet Yeun Mak.

As the sorrowful friends below gather

To say goodbye, the saints above prepare

To welcome with joy a sweet kinddred soul.

She walked the earth gently, leaving behind

Only soft footprints for us to look for,

To trace - a trail of the beatitudes.

Whenever I think of her, I recall

The beatitudes taught in the Bible.

Unbeknownst to her, she mirrored for me

The blessed states of spiritual wellness,

In spite of her lingering illnesses -

A woman of the beatitudes.

Always poor in spirit and pure in heart,

Often mournful, never self-sufficient

Nor prideful, she found the Kindom of God.

That she knew so well, was not recompense -

Not something earned, but a precious gift given

By the God of the beatitudes.

She was in disposition meek and mild.

She treated people with grace and kindness.

Typically, with her sweet smile, soft gaze,

And quiet understanding, she cheered us on,

Eased our burdens and comforted us well -

Sharing the beatitudes.

Whnever I think of her, I recall

The beatitudes taught in the Gospels.

Unbeknownst to her, she has taught me

Many a lesson of quiet suffering,

Being merciful and living in peace.

I shall miss this beatitude woman.

As the loving friends below gather

To wave goodbye, she is walking gently

In a far better place, at last, well and free

Amongst the saintly crowds, leaving behind

Only soft footprints while basking in

Ultimate wellness, the beatitudes.

Hello Yuen, it seems I will see you again but you have been taken away from us. Remember when you were pressed for deadlines, how I prodded you to think .... tomorrow is another day.

And now, for you tomorrow is eternity

you will spend in the presence of God.

So long dear friend!
