In memory of

I first met Yukio playing tennis in Rye. He explained that he had conducted a study and decided that sharply angled shots were the most effective to win points. He served from the extreme corner of the court and proved how effective such angles were, usually prevailing. He'd start off like a teenager, no real warm-up rally, and throw in some drop shots, but showed considerable patience with my frustration. Eventually he might forget the score, and I'd resort to angled serves so the outcome became less predictable. His spry play didn't reveal his age, but a few dinners we had did show the breadth of his career and interests and Colette provided revealing details. A few years ago he said he was starting some treatment, and then returned some months later to the court displaying before and after cross sections of his brain on his cell, didn't loose a step. I didn't realize last October when he mentioned an up-coming check-up that it would be our last time on the court. I will miss the competition, his humor and friendship. Not sure I understood the origin of his political views, seemingly America could do not wrong, or the recordings he began to listen to while on the tennis court. But he did mention a gift of a baseball bat from an American which seem to leave an indelible impression when he was very young.
I'm sorry I didn't realize sooner as I tried to contact him over the winter and Spring. Our sincerest condolences, and may Yukio continue to inspire you all.

Marc,
I am so sorry. I did not know. If there is any solace is that his teachings live through you, and for that I am beyond grateful.

I am very grateful for having had a father like mine and for being with him during his last two months on the earth. He was one of my life mentors and inspired me to become a psychiatrist. Even when he couldn't talk, walk, or take care of himself he taught me about generosity and dignity. He was always calm, patient, affectionate, loving, and connected with his family to the end.
