I am so sad to have heard this news. It is just so so sad.
Zev was a part od all of my teenaged years and we went to Isreal together.

Dear Family and Friends,
We deeply appreciate your memories of Zev, your heartfelt condolences. Zev, as many of you have written, was his own person: kind, loving, gentle, very funny, exceptionally courageous. He was a man of integrity and dignity, especially so during many years of illness. Zev was creative, a true artist with his own unique vision. His films, music, and writing are a legacy for many. We will cherish Zev in our hearts and he will be a continuing inspiration to us and to all who loved him and were touched by him.
With Love,
Sharon, Stanley, Beth and family, Judith and family, Joanne

I have no idea what prompted me to Google Zev, and it is with great shock and sadness that what was returned was this terrible news.
Zev and I shared a room in Japan in the early 1990's. We were both newly arrived in that country and quickly developed a friendship over our (sometimes!) similar taste in music and our mutual bafflement over some of the quirkier aspects of the culture we were enjoying.
Zev enjoyed creating mix tapes for me (a large number of which I think I still have somewhere) and presenting them as the latest (wittily entitled) bulletin from Planet Zev that I should be educating myself with. My girlfriend (now wife of 20 years) and I enjoyed going to see Zev as RoughAge and a number of his other then musical guises.
I send my sincere condolences at this sad and unexpected news. I will always remember Zev as the mischievous challenger of expectations.

Dear Sharon, Stan, Beth, Judith, Asher family, Joanne and friends, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Zev was absolutely one of a kind. Someone once called him a 'renaissance punk' and I found that to be quite fitting. He was very dear to me and I will miss him forever. Here is a photo of him during a trip to visit Judith and her wonderful family in Venice, Italy.

Stan, Sharon, and the Asher family:
I did not know Zev well -- I only met him a couple of times -- but from the way you spoke of him all those years ago, I recognized your pride, sometimes with a touch of bafflement.
Zev was a kind of mythic figure to me. I would feel a current of recognition when I would read about him in the media, and I was always somewhat in awe of his maverick sensibilities and voracious creativity.
I remember that he once had a band called Rough-age. I remember Stan chuckling at the pun and quietly kvelling in the studio at CINQ-FM. That was all I really needed to know about how important Zev was to you.
Your loss is incalculable, and my condolences are utterly insufficient to ease your grief. But you have them.
