Janet Reno
1938 - 2016
Janet Reno, a former United States attorney general who served under President Bill Clinton, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, according to her sister.

Reno became the first female attorney general after President Clinton nominated her Feb. 11, 1993. Just a month later, she was confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Upon her retirement Jan. 20, 2001, she became the second longest-serving attorney general after William Wirt.

Reno, who was born July 21, 1938, in Miami, Florida, studied chemistry during the late 1950s at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. After receiving her undergraduate degree there, she graduated from Harvard Law School in 1963. After working for two Miami legal firms, she became state's attorney for Miami-Dade County. She served in that capacity from 1978 to 1993.

During her tenure as U.S. attorney general, she presided over the prosecution of the Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski. Also during her time as the nation's top lawyer, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were captured and convicted of carrying out the Oklahoma City bombing.

After serving under President Clinton, Reno ran for governor of Florida in 2002. She lost, however, in a close Democratic primary election. She later toured the United States, delivering speeches related to the criminal justice system.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Reno family in this time of loss. I had the honor of serving under Janet Reno as an Assistant State Attorney in the 1980's. Janet always stressed that it was our job, as Assistant State Attorneys, to seek justice, not just a conviction, even if justice meant dropping a case because it was the right and just thing to do. She strived for excellence in all that she did and she instilled in all of us that quality of excellence. She was a legend in so many ways and she will be missed.

I worked for DOJ during her administration. Our youngest son was killed in the line of duty while serving as a Sheriff Officer. She took the time from her busy schedule to have my wife and I come to her office for a private meeting. We will never forget her gracious kind words. Thank you for serving our country. Condolences to the Family.. I never met her in person. I did have the opportunity to write to her in the capacity of" Attorney General" - I was very surprised and please that I recieved a response to my concerns. There's only a few people in public office that would respond to a citizens concerns.. I respected her and she renewed my belief that some political officials do really care about the people they serve. I treasure the response I recieved from her and /or her office. A wonderful example of Strength and Compassion Thank You

First of all and most important are my condolences to the entire family and close friends of Janet. The news of her passing has truly mad me sad. I love Janet from a long ago unique tragic part of my life when she was there for my family and when I came home for recovery was also there for me for trips to Easter Seal for physical therapy. I've never forgotten that throughout the years. I bet anything she and Marge are just talking up a storm.

In every generation it seems that there is a small number of truly exceptional human beings, who somehow give purpose and meaning to the entire populous of that generation; Janet Reno is one of those exceptional persons in my generation. It is my hope that all of you in her family will find these messages of warm condolence helpful at this difficult time. She was a great lady, a strong legal mind, and a great asset to all of us in our generation and our country.

Thanks for your loyalty to the Hornor family by attending the funeral of Crane M. hornor in 2003 and for doing the eulogy for my mother, Maria B. Hornor, at her funeral in 2007. You were my mother's star basketball player at Coral Gables High School in the 1950's when she was coaching there. Thanks also for putting on a skit at my mother's retirement party from Miami Dade Junior College in 1986 (Mrs. Hornor was a physical education teacher and was one of the original 29 people hired by Miami Dade JC in 1960).
Thanks so much for your integrity and hard work you did during your stellar career.

I worked for Janet Reno when I graduated from law school, and I was and have continued to be proud to say that she was my attorney general. She was a wonderful woman, and I wish her peace.

Before I went to law school, I was a reporter for The Palm Beach Post. I don't know if Maggy Hurchalla remembers me, one of the youngest staff reporters at the Post, asking her questions for stories -- she was a county commissioner at the time. But I remember you, Ms. Hurchalla, and I would like to send you extra love in these months. You are the true reason I am here, writing. I lost my brother a few years ago. There are no words. Five years out, there are still no words. I send you a long-distance hug, eve as I wish I could do more.
