Scott Hickman Obituary

Scott C. Hickman, age 51, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, in Seattle, Wash., after a two-year battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. He was surrounded by his parents, David and Shelley Hickman, and sister, Julie Hickman Burg, and her family. Scott was born on May 11, 1964, in Toledo, Ohio. He grew up in Adrian, Mich., graduating from Adrian High School in 1982. Scott went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from Alma College and became a certified public accountant (CPA) in 1986.

Scott enjoyed a successful career in finance and accounting. He lived in Pebble Beach, Calif., for 16 years, retiring as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Starlight International. Prior, he was a finance officer for Clopay Corp. and Chiquita Banana in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a CPA for Price Waterhouse Coopers in Detroit, Mich.

Scott was known for his quick wit and deadpan delivery. He enlivened Hickman Christmas gatherings with gag gifts and "joke" machines and enriched his work environments with humor. He's also fondly remembered for his love of dogs, new technology, luxury cars and an endless sweet tooth, for which he was warmly referred to as the "cookie monster" by his niece.

A former Eagle Scout himself, Scott volunteered with several scouting groups over the years and for the United Way of Monterey County and Monterey Bay Lab Rescue. On weekends, Scott could be found at the beach in Carmel with his chocolate Lab, Brewer, and his beach friends and community.

Scott is survived by his parents, David and Shelley Hickman, former longtime residents of Lenawee County and presently of Seattle, Wash., and his sister, Julie Hickman Burg of Seattle and her family, husband, Geoff Burg, and children, Guy and Annabelle Burg. Scott was an active, doting uncle, ensuring that his nephew and niece will always be able to handle a good joke.

Never one to seek attention, Scott requested no memorial service. He appreciated the support of all who helped make these last two years more comfortable for him and his family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the ALS Association Evergreen Chapter, www.alsa-ec.org, or Monterey Bay Lab Rescue, www.mbaylabrescue.org, P.O. Box 269, Pebble Beach, CA 93953.

I worked with Scott here in Monterey and we shared a lot of things in common. Both from the midwest, both CPAs and both worked at Price Waterhouse. After I left Starlight, we didn't stay in touch very often but he would call occasionally and we'd enjoy our conversations. I'm very sad by this news and happy that he was with his family. He, his parents and family are in my thoughts and prayers.
