LIMA - Benjamin James Smith, Sr. age 52, of Lima passed away Thursday, November 27, 2025, at St. Rita's after experiencing a cardiac event at home.
He was born February 2, 1973, at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina to Byron G. and Evelyn Kay (Sullivan) Smith, who survive in Lima. He married Laura Sue Roose on May 23, 2009; she survives in Lima. Ben was the Safety Director for Peterson Construction, a job he truly loved. Ben had also worked at Allied Environmental, BMWC, and had a side-hustle as Ferrier. He graduated from Elida High School in 1991 where he wrestled. he continued his love of wrestling as a high school wrestling official.
Ben had also been active in the Northwest Ohio Turkey Federation and participated in the disability turkey hunts. He loved riding his Harley and cheering on the Buckeyes. He was an avid griller and smoker; his shop door was always open to family and friends as the gathering place.
He was also very picky about his yard - only straight lines.
Survivors include: "Dee Dee's" special grandchildren: Alden, Halle, Levi, and baby boy on the way, Kenna, Dane, and Nia; a son, Ben (Heather), Smith, Jr. of Mt. Victory, OH, grandchildren: Piper, Isaac, Anna and Adalyn; brothers: Gene (Cristi) Smith of Elida and Brad (Jesi) Smith of Rochester Hills, Michigan also Uncle Tom (Kay) Sullivan of Grove City and Aunt Linda (Harry) Schermer of Sedona, Arizona; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ben was preceded in death by his daughter Alayna 'Lou' (Smith) Geiler. He was a member
of New Hope Christian Center where the family will receive friends Thursday, December 4, from 4 to 8 pm and Friday from 10 to 11 am at 2240 Baty Road. The funeral service will follow at 11 am, Friday, at the church with Pastor James Menke officiating.
