Darrell Helms

1939 - 2022

LIMA -- Darrell D. Helms, 82, passed away on August 27, 2022, at 4:24 am, at Mercy Health - St. Rita's Medical Center.

Darrell was born December 12, 1939 in Arlington, OH, to James "Burt" and Treva (Corbin) Helms who both preceded him in death. On July 23, 1960 he married Judy (Cross) Helms who survives.

Darrell graduated from Lima Senior High in 1957. He retired from West Ohio Gas Company / Dominion Gas. Darrell was the owner and operator of Concessions Helms Canerack. Many knew him as the "Caneman". A little known fact about Darrell was he was a Western Style Square dancer, caller and instructor. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed playing when he had the chance. Darrell and his wife attended Westside United Methodist Church. He cherished his wife Judy and loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. Darrell also loved his fury kitties.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Judy A. Helms of Lima, OH, children, Eric (Deb) Helms of Lafayette, OH, Darren (DeEtte "Dee") Helms of Delphos, OH, grandchildren, Aleesha (Matt) Miller, Aaron Helms, Logan Helms, Cole Helms, Kaleb Helms, Karlie (Kyle) Kirkendall, Karley (Austin) Clevenger, great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Caelynn, Oaklynn, Serenity, Ashten, Layton, Liam, Westen, Vincent, Myles, Weston and Layne, and one sister, Betty (William) Flarida.

He is preceded in death by his son, Kent Alan Helms, grandson Robert Drew Helms, siblings, Lois (Robert) Robinson, Pauline (Harry) Dearwester, Colleen Helms, and B.J. Helms.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 11:00am at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Eastside Chapel. Pastor Dan Lee to officiate the service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and one hour prior to the service at the Eastside Chapel.
