David Askins Obituary

PHARR, TX -- David (Dave) Askins (formally of Defiance) born May 9, 1948, to Wendell and Margaret (Fisher) Askins, died unexpectedly at his home in Pharr, Texas on August 22, 2022. He was 74 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dan, Ronny, and Joseph Askins, and sisters Margaret Askins, and Theresa Vitantonio.

Dave was a 1966 graduate from Ft Jennings High School.

He began working for General Motors in Defiance, Ohio after graduation. He worked as a millwright and held alternate committeemen offices during his working days. He was nicknamed "Fuzzy" by his UAW brothers and sisters and continued his career there for over 38 years before retiring in 2004.

On May 9th, 1988, Dave married Sally (Yeager) Askins, who survives. Together they have 5 sons - Charlie (Kim) Askins of Defiance, Oh; Jeff (Traci) Askins of Galloway, New Jersey; Terry (Susie) Yeager of Dublin, Oh; Greg (Bobbi) Yeager of Defiance, Oh; and Rob (Jody) Yeager of Avon, Indiana. There are 11 grandchildren - Gavin, Graham, Grayson, and Grayleigh Askins; Kelly and Kyle Askins; Jarred Yeager; Morgan (Taylor) Ruiz, Zack Williams; and Ross and Lindsay Yeager. Also surviving are sisters Becky (Arnold) Osting and Mary Alger, brothers Bill (Jan) Askins, Fred (Tina) Askins, and Steve Askins.

Dave was a man of great faith and loved the Lord with all his heart. He was the head usher of Our Savior of Lutheran Church in Pharr,Texas and was very involved in their day-to-day activities.

Dave was an active member of the retirement park where he and Sally lived. He was known as a generous man, helping wherever he could. He organized activities and took care of supplies at their complex building for many years. You would find him starting his day at the park swimming pool, actively engaged in exercise classes and fellowship with their friends.

Dave and Sally made it a point to spend quality time with their loved ones and friends when they would travel back home to Ohio. Family was of utmost importance, and they made sure that every moment would count. Their travels each summer were long and arduous, but they made the trip to each one of their children's homes to visit and make memories. He was an avid Ohio State and Lions fan and despite the season's record, he would proudly sport their attire and watch every game.

Dave had a wicked sense of humor and he used that to diffuse tense situations or just to get a rise out of someone simply because he could. When Dave, Charlie, and Jeff were together there were constant jokes and razzing of one another.

Dave was the bond that pulled people together and would become an instant mentor in times of crisis or unease. His kindness and humor will be fond memories for anyone that knew and loved him.

There will be a celebration of life in Dave's honor on October 15th at Defiance Christian Church, 955 Stanley Road Defiance, Ohio. Doors will open at 11am, services will begin at 11:30am with a light lunch and fellowship to follow from 12-4pm in the church cafeteria.
