Douglas Sorensen Obituary

WAPAKONETA - Douglas M. "Doug" Sorensen, 80, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, passed away at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Mercy Health-St. Rita's, Lima.

He was born on December 25, 1943, in Cleveland, OH to Martin Sorensen and Dorothy (Seitz) Koepke who preceded him in death. On November 24, 1967, he married Faye Wendt she survives in Wapakoneta.

Survivors include 2 children Chris (Yvonne) Sorensen of Wapakoneta, Jill (Mike) Sparks of Sidney; 3 grandchildren Harrison, Stephanie Sorensen, Kirsten Sparks; siblings Chad Sorensen, Janet Harder, Galen Koepke, Randy (Debbie) Koepke, Keith (Rhonda) Koepke, Kathy (Barry) Cochran.

Douglas was preceded in death by stepfather Grayson Koepke.

Doug was a 1962 graduate from Elmore-Harris High School in Elmore, Ohio. He proudly served the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1965-1967 where he was awarded the Purple Heart twice. After returning he began working as a Field Engineer for Northern Ohio Telephone Company of Port Clinton, and General Telephone Company in Bellevue, OH. In 1978 he and Faye moved to Wapakoneta to take over the family business of selling crop insurance and creating Sorensen Insurance Agency where their son, daughter and grandson continue the legacy of working there today. He was member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Post 8445, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #1126 and the Eagles #691. Doug loved collecting cars and woodworking where he made a variety of things. He also enjoyed collecting and restoring antiques along with making leather clothing. As an artist, Doug was very talented, and you could always find his doodles anywhere on a sheet of paper.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2024, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wapakoneta with Pastor Doug Pretorius officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery with military rites begin performed by the V.F.W. Post 8445.

Family and friends may visit from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Wapakoneta and 1 hour prior to the service at church. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or Auglaize County Humane Society.
