KALIDA – Eugene "Gene" Deters, 94, of Kalida, passed away at 9:40 a.m., Friday, December 15, 2023, at The Meadows of Ottawa. He was born August 23, 1929, in Glandorf to the late Henry and Helen (Lammers) Deters. On August 26, 1950, he married Doris E. Nartker, who preceded him in death on February 29, 2016.
Survivors include five children: Kathleen (David) Bruskotter of Findlay, Keith (Donna) Deters of Port Clinton, Judy (Terry) Eickholt of Ottoville, Jeff Deters and Jill (Jon) Laudick, both of Kalida; eight grandchildren: Matt Bruskotter, Michael (Nicole) Bruskotter, Jason (Tara) Deters, Justin (Liza) Deters, Andrew Eickholt, Melissa (Cameron) Roehm, Jordan (Kristen) Laudick and Brady (Rachel Warnecke) Laudick; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ellen Schmenk of Ottawa; a sister-in-law, Patty Deters of Glandorf; and brother-in-law, Tom Klima of Ottoville.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Deters and sister, Sue Klima.
Gene retired from Ford Motor Company, Lima, after 36 years of service, and was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Kalida, its Holy Name Society and Kalida Fish and Game. Gene partnered in the opening of the first Carryout in Kalida. He was an avid Cleveland Browns, Cavs and Indians fan. He loved spending time with his family and friends, holding a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene enjoyed traveling with his wife, Doris, visiting all 50 States.
Funeral mass will begin 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida with Fr. Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of mass on Wednesday at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church, Kalida or Putnam County CAP. Condolences may be expressed at www.lovefuneralhome.com.
