LIMA -- James R. Sullivan, age 101, passed away peacefully in his daughter Maureen's arms.
James was born on October 29, 1921, in Roslindale, Massachusetts to Patrick J. and Mary Mullin (Byrne) Sullivan. Both parents preceded him in death. On April 20, 1947, in Roslindale, Massachusetts, at Holy Name Catholic Church, he married Dorothy H. (Donovan) Sullivan. Dorothy, whom he lovingly referred to as "his bride" even after her death, preceded him in death on October 27, 1977.
James Sullivan grew up in Roslindale, MA, during the depression and his parents instilled great values, great faith and a superior work ethic. James started working when he was 12 years old as a newspaper delivery boy, a caddy on the Charles River Country Club and the George Wright Golf Course. He began working for his dad at the age of 14 in his father's construction business. James was lucky enough to grow up close to the Atlantic Ocean and spent time on Lake Pearl and Cape Cod with his family. He was a part of the Knot Hole Gang at Fenway Park for the Red Sox and the Braves Field, before the Braves moved to Atlanta, GA.
James graduated from St. Frances Xavier Grade School, Commerce High School and Bentley University, and attended the Sacred Heart Church. He later attended and graduated from Tufts University in Medford, MA, after the war.
James was attending Bentley University in Boston, MA when he enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was accepted to the Navy V5 Flight Cadet Program on December 9, 1942. During his Naval career he attended several colleges and was commissioned as a Naval Officer at the Pensacola, FL Naval Air Station. James flew many planes and loved flying jets. His first operational Navy plane he flew was the Douglass SBD. He flew the SBD2, Grumman Duck, P51 Mustang, Vought F4U Corsair and many more. His favorite during WWII was the Vought F4U Corsair. He was stationed on the USS Guadalcanal Jeep Carrier and the USS Midway as well as many Naval bases in Massachusetts, Florida, California, and Virginia. James made many great friends while in the U.S. Navy, during the time he was a cadet in the U.S. Navy, he played baseball with Ted Williams and Johnny Saine.
While James was busy flying jets, landing on carriers and defending our country, he married the love of his life and embarked on his next journey. He returned to Tufts University and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree. James also continued to fly jets in the Naval Reserve and in 1954 James joined the Westinghouse Aerospace Electrical Division in Lima, OH and became the program manager for the Apollo Program, Space Shuttle Program, Av-8B program, Space Lab and worked on the Harrier Jet Program, just to name a few of the programs he was involved with, James got the opportunity to work with many astronauts and became friends with many astronauts and many engineers and leaders at NASA and North American Aviation and Martin, Marrietta in Houston, TX. James had passion to succeed in the space program and received many awards and accolades for the dedication and endless hours on the space program. He worked on components that were used on the Space Shuttle for over 20 years that were used until last space shuttle flight. James was part of the team that helped convert energy from AC to DC to help Apollo 13 return to earth after an in-space explosion. James worked until he was 76 years old.
James enjoyed ice hockey and ice skating with his children. He loved going to the beach, swimming and vacations with his family. James enjoyed traveling to Ireland to see his father's home and the country of Ireland. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame and Boston College football and enjoyed golfing at Hawthorne Hills in Lima.
I want to thank my daughter Maureen for giving up her career, travels and so much more to take care of me since 2006. She sacrificed everything to make sure she took great care of me. She did everything for me and for that I will be forever grateful. Maureen and I have a wonderful father/daughter relationship and friendship. Maureen always told me and showed me every day of my life how much she truly loved me and cared about me. She stayed right by my side, and it meant the world to me that she was not going to leave me to grow old by myself.
I had the opportunity to do a lot of things in life and none of them came easy. My faith in God is what got me through the hard times and made my blessings so much better.
One of James's favorite quotes, Keep the Faith!
James sacrificed so much for his children and grandchildren.
Many people respected and loved James. He was very intelligent, caring and courageous. He had a great sense of humor and was extremely proud of his Irish heritage.
James always threw a great St. Patrick's Day party.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
If you enjoy your freedom today, thank a veteran for their sacrifice.

A True Hero.
A Legend.
My Friend.
Forever His Cutie
This man was many things. The accomplishments and lives he touched in his 101 years was beyond astounding.
I remember meeting this adorable guy when I called his name to head to the scale to get his weight and from that moment on he became more than just "my patient". He told me stories working for NASA and flying bomber jets. He told me about all of the amazing things he did throughout his life. Even 4 weeks before his passing his mind and memory were more in tact than people half his age.
He was ornery as ever and always had some quick witted comeback when you would least expect it.
But the one thing I personally admired was his love for his daughter.
His daughter and his relationship warmed my heart as I could feel the "daddy daughter love" that I personally cherished for so long. I knew him and his daughter for years before I realized she was not an only child. It was always just them two. I watched Maureen love and care for him better than anyone could have. She would call or text me and say "dad wants to know, or dad won't do this and I know if it comes from you he will" and many other reasons but it made me feel so special to know this man trusted me, my advice, my knowledge and my opinion. Of all the nurses and medical professionals he encountered throughout his 101 years, he trusted me above all the rest.
I don't believe he would have lived as long as he did without the care he was given by his daughter. I went to his home about a month before his passing to check his vitals and assess a "sound" he was making when trying to walk. Out of that visit the one thing that stands out was when Maureen walked out of the room and our normal conversation quickly went to "I am worried about Maureen".
He knew one day his time would come and he wasn't afraid to go as much as he was afraid of leaving his little girl. She was everything to him and I know he was everything to her. He knew what she sacrificed and everything she did for him. Not because she had to but because it was her honor to care for him. I even told her she would make a wonderful nurse but I recommended her not to be a nurse for hospice as she would be too good and keep them all alive.
He and Maureen would send me cards on special occasions and he would always write "hello cutie" along with a little message. It meant so much to me. So much that I wanted to honor him in some special way. I took a copy of one of his handwritten "hello cutie" notes and had it permanently placed on my right hip.
I went over to show him after I got it and he made a comment about him "being famous" and was very pleased with the placement. His eyes lit up and he smiled so big.
I know he started as my patient but I've been honored with the best friendship that I'll never forget.
I will love you forever Mr. Sullivan
Always, your cutie

So very sorry for the loss of your dad. Seeing this brought back so many wonderful memories of your family. Living around the corner and being friends with Dottie, spending many nights at your house. I remember your mom making those wonderful fritters in the mornings. I would see your dad in church sitting is the same seat every week. He was a good man. I lost my parents some years ago and I cherish all the memories. You were so very lucky to have him for so long. I will be praying for all of you during this most difficult time.

I´ve known Jim for many years because he worked with my husband, Ray Beach. When Jim found out that Ray had married a gal of Irish ancestry, he was thrilled and told Ray he did well. He always remembered my name, as well as the names of our three children. He came to our 25th anniversary party. He would call me, just so we could talk. I will miss him. I will miss his positive outlook on life, his honest opinions, and his annual Saint Patrick´s Day card. I am heartsick for his family, especially Maureen, who was kind enough to bring Jim to our home for a visit. I pray that all the good memories will soon replace the sadness in your hearts.

I worked at the NASA Glenn Research Center and had the distinct honor to work with Jim on the NASA space station power system and the Orion crew module. Jim was the Program manager for work Westinghouse did on the NASA space station advanced development program for the power system. During my career I worked with many program managers and I can confidently say that he had no equal in the aerospace industry. His honesty in representing both the Westinghouse contracted work and in getting the best product for the government made him unique. He is the only Program manager that I know of that had power hardware on all NASA manned programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle, Space Station, and the Artemis crewed capsule). Beyond the contract work I and my family had the blessing of knowing Jim personally as both a friend and a fellow Catholic. He will be forever the ideal of what a Catholic needs to be in this world for me and his passing leaves us all a model to follow in our lives. God rest, Jim Sullivan you have earned the respect of everyone. that had the opportunity to know you.

Uncle Jim was one of a kind. We had a great conversation at his 100th birthday and knowing that my youngest son had been taking flying lessons he described in vivid detail what it was like to be a bomber pilot in the war. He was an amazing gentleman and will be missed by so many.
