Joseph Fields Obituary

LIMA — Joseph L. Fields, age 86, went home to be with the Lord on November 19,2021, at 5:05 a.m. at Lima Convalescent Home. He was born on Sunday, May 26, 1935 in Lima, Ohio, the seventh of 15 children. His parents Eldridge Scott and Fannie (Ward) Fields, both preceded him in death.

On February 7, 1959, he was united in holy matrimony to Dorothy L. O'Day (who preceded him in death July 8, 2014). To this union they were blessed with two sons, Joseph L. Fields II, (deceased) and D. Marc (Julie) Fields of Lima.

He attended Lima public schools and graduated from Lima South, 1954. He has served in the United States Army 1955 - 1957. Had worked at Lima Auto Service and Ohio Steel Foundry. He was hired full time to the Lima Police Department on March 22,1965, and on June 2, 1965, he was shot while on duty. He worked street patrol for 7 years and for the Juvenile Bureau for 18 years. He was named Law Officer of the year - 1975. Following his retirement from the police department in 1990, he was employed with the Supreme Court of Ohio 3rd District Ohio Court of Appeals where he worked until 2006. Whenever you saw Joe, he was always smiling. He enjoyed traveling and good "argumentative" conversations, especially in the ones he was always right.

Besides his son, Marc (Julie) Fields, he leaves to cherish his precious memory a granddaughter, Misti L. (Curtis) Nance and 3 great grandsons, Landon Fields, Brayden and Jaxtin Nance of Lima; 2 goddaughters, Trish "Twig" Julien of Lima and Paula (O'Neil) Gwinn, of Houston, Tx.; a brother, Floyd E. Fields of Lima; 3 sisters Loretta J. Mobley of Detroit, Mi.; Patricia A. Musgrove and Donna M. Fields, both of Lima; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by a great grandson, Matthew Mikesell; 4 brothers, John E. Fields, William H. Fields, Howard E. Fields and Albert H. Fields; 4 sisters, Ruth M. Penager, Alice G. Gatewood, Betty J. Smith and Barbara L. Bennett; 1 infant brother and 1 infant sister.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 22, 2021, from 2 p.m.to 6:30 p.m. at Hanneman-Siferd Funeral Home, 506 N. Cable Rd. Lima Ohio 45805, with the Rev. Dennis Ward officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the US Army Honor Guard, The combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard, and the Lima Police Department Honor Guard at 6:30 pm.
