KALIDA -- Marie H. Grote, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went peacefully to our Heavenly Father at 9:05 am, Sunday, November 2, 2025 at her residence. She was born January 3, 1936 in Ottoville to the late Albert and Verena (Grubenhoff) Ruen. On August 8, 1959, she married Robert F. Grote and was happily married for 51 years until his death on February 17, 2010.
She created a beautiful life that revolved around faith, family and friends. She was a devoted mother to her daughters: Laura (Timothy) Freed of Elida and Joyce Grote of Kalida; her grandchildren: Stacey (Emilee) Freed of Colonial Beach, VA and Alexander (Bailey) Freed of Shawnee; and her favorite great-grandson, Maverick Freed. These were the greatest joys of her life.
Marie will rejoin her husband, Robert, daughter Deborah Grote, parents, and brothers Owen (Rita) Grubenhoff and Robert (Doris) Ruen in heaven.
Marie was a faithful parishioner at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kalida where she helped with Vacation Bible School crafts for many years, a member of Altar Rosary Society and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Center for water exercises, lunch dates with her treasured friends, and putting together puzzles as wallpaper for her garage. Marie was an avid book reader as well as a sticker book and Diamond art enthusiast. She will be sadly missed.
Funeral mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2025 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Kalida with Fr. Joseph Varghese officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday and one hour prior to mass Thursday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Twp. A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
