Michael Bowersock Obituary

MICHAEL BOWERSOCK

DUBLIN — Michael G. Bowersock, age 56, of Dublin, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Loyola Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Born in Lima, Ohio, Mike was a graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School, Class of 1977.

He received his B.A., Journalism degree from The Ohio State University and his M.B.A., Finance degree from Franklin University. Mike enjoyed a 32 year career in broadcasting with television stations in Lima, Toledo, Detroit, MI and Columbus. Most recently, he served as a Public Information Officer with the Ohio National Guard. Mike was a devoted family man who adored his wife, four children and countless close friends. He loved broadcasting, but reporting was much more than just a job. It was about connecting with people, listening to and telling their stories. He was compassionate and genuine with everyone he met and spent much of his free time volunteering to make a difference in others' lives. He won numerous awards for reporting, was a talented chef and musician and loved playing with the Gladden Strummers. He was a man of faith who grew up in the Catholic Church and was a member of the United Church of Christ for 30 years. His spirit will live on in all the lives he touched.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Ida Bowersock, his brother Bobby Bowersock and his sister-in-law Mary Lou Bowersock.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 30 years, Lisa Winegardner Bowersock, his children Clinton Michael Bowersock of Oakland, CA, Thomas Ray Bowersock, James Davis Bowersock and Grace Margaret Bowersock, all of Dublin; his brother Bill Bowersock of Tampa, FL; the extended Bowersock, Winegardner and Paxton Families; and his many colleagues and friends.

Mike and Lisa are faithful members of Dublin Community Church, United Church of Christ where Lisa serves as the Associate Minister.

Family will receive friends from 2:00-8:00p.m. FRIDAY at the RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, OH 43065 (614)-792-1471. (The funeral home is located on W. Olentangy St./Powell Rd./SR 750 14 mile east of Sawmill Parkway.)

A Celebration of Life Service for Mike will be held at 2:00p.m. SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2016 at DUBLIN COMMUNITY CHURCH, UCC, 81 West Bridge Street, Dublin, OH 43017 with Reverend Robert Tussing, officiating. Graveside burial services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2016 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 3000 Harding Highway, Lima, OH 45804.

In lieu of flowers, Rev. Robert Tussing and Dublin Community Church requests that memorial contributions may be made to either: The Mike Bowersock Memorial Account at any Fifth/Third Bank in Central Ohio, Lima or Detroit or Dublin Community Church Abiding Memorials Fund www.DublinCommunityChurch.org. (Memorial donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.)

Heartfelt sympathy to Mike's family and friends. He certainly was a well respected and successful journalist but the many memories shared show he was an even "bigger" person to those who knew him on a personal level. Heaven certainly gained a good one.

My condolences to the Bowersock family. An early end to a Great Life! Growing up as neighbors and friends we had many great times playing Army (sometimes with BB guns), Hot Wheels (we had mammoth city's), baseball, shooting Estes rockets, and list goes on. It saddens my heart that our lives went separate ways. May you rest in peace with Mom and Dad. Goodbye my friend until we meet again.

To Lisa and family,
I never had the opportunity to work with Mike in the same newsrooms when we both worked in Columbus TV and for that I am truly sad. But we often saw each other out on stories and he was always keeping everyone loose and (often) laughing. But I want you to know that I thought of Mike as much more than just a reporter. He was a journalist and a storyteller in the best tradition and I admired his work greatly.

Thought I am sad for your loss and will miss running into Mike in my capacity working in public relations; know that he touched many lives in best of ways and that his displays of kindness and humor live on in those whose lives he touched. Ih this way, he will always be among us and you.

Thank God for people like Mike Bowersock and for the families that he loved unconditionally, from his own dearly cherished family circle, to his circle of family & work friends, and the biggest circle of all, those of us that knew him through his reporting with compassion and total kindness. Like many others posting entries here, I never met Mike "in person," but certainly felt he was a friend that I could invite into my home via television, one that knew how to report facts in a way that gave more than just a cut-and-dried story. His heart showed in his work, and it was clear that he was dedicated to doing it well. God loaned us one of His very best, in Mike, and I pray this comforts his family & friends at this time. He will truly be always remembered by many, with love!

My name is David P. Lewis and I am no one special. I just wanted to say I encountered Mike at some public event many years ago. We talked briefly and I recalled he told me he had four children. I have no family(children), so whenever I saw Mike on tv, I always remembered my pleasant encounter with him that one single time and I knew he was pleased to have his nice wife and family. He is someone to remember with nice thoughts.
