Rex Mowery Obituary

LIMA — Rex John Mowery, age 79, died Monday, December 7, 2020 at his home. He was born June 11, 1941, in Lima, Ohio to Arthur and Mildred (Metzger) Mowery. They both preceded him in death. He married Kathy Simmons Mowery on July 30, 1966.

Rex is survived by his wife of 54 years, his son Scott (Audie Brandehoff) Mowery, of Gurnee, Illinois and daughter Amy (Chad) Hannan of Lima, Ohio, granddaughters: Megan Mowery, Leah Mowery, and Emma Mowery, and a grandson Lucas Hannan. Also surviving, his sister Georgia (Brian) McMichael, brothers-in-law: Mike (Karen) Simmons, Don (Betty) Simmons and Dominic (Virginia) DeGrands and sisters in-law: Pat Marlatt, Barb Hoersten and Gloria (Ed) Greeley. He is preceded in death by a brother Greg Mowery and sisters-in-law: Sue Mowery and Nancy DeGrands, a brother-in-law Dan Hoersten and a nephew Marc Simmons.

Rex graduated from Lima Senior high school class of 1959. His first job during high school was as a pin setter at L&L Bowling Lanes in Lima (on North Street) and that was the start of his bowling career. He worked at Pangles Master Markets for 25 years and then worked as a Service Merchandiser for O.G.Sandbo Co. Then at his retirement he started working at De Havens where he worked for 15 years. He enjoyed working with the people and helping them. People would stop and compliment him on his home landscaping . He had a love of roses, flowers, and feeding the birds.

His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He traveled many miles to watch his granddaughters in sports and school activities. Of course he spent time with his little 'buddy' grandson Lucas. Rex had a good sense of humor and always had a story or a joke to tell. He never met a stranger; he always found someone to talk to wherever he went.

Rex was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns, he even tried to help out the teams by not watching them until towards the end of the games hoping it would help them win. Through the years he played many softball games with the Lima Softball League. He was an avid fisherman that was always hoping to catch the "big one". Rex loved to bowl and on January 11, 1970, he won the Lima City Singles Bowling Tournament. On December 14, 2004, Rex bowled the game of a lifetime '300.' He continued to bowl until recently. Due to his decline of his health, he was having more difficulty doing things he loved. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease earlier this year. He was a member of the Lima Eagles, Aerie # 370 for over 45 years. He really missed his biweekly card playing there with his buddies due to restrictions of the pandemic.

Rex was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church for over 50 years. His funeral mass will be on Friday, December 18, 2020, at 10:30 AM at St. Charles Catholic Church. There will be a private family viewing prior to mass, and mass will be live-streamed at www.stcharles.org. Entombment will be in the Gethsemani Cemetery Mausoleum following the mass. In accordance with recommendations regarding Covid-19 precautions the family and the church asks that visitors please wear masks and practice social distancing while attending services.

Memorial contributions can be made to Rock Steady Boxing at Senior Citizen Services 3400 W. Elm St. Lima, Ohio or to Parkinson's Research 800 Rose St., Lexington, KY 40536. The family has entrusted the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL in assisting with funeral arrangements.

Kathy, I am so sorry. Rex was a fun boss at Pangles, I learned alot from Rex . Those were the best years of my life, working with Rex and working at Pangles. I have had dreams about working at pangles and with Rex. Not sure what that means. I remember being with you and Rex at your house on Nixon when we were all a little younger.
I bowled with Rex. I remember he worked with me at Westgate Lanes on my bowling to try to improve my skills. He was a good teacher. I never got as good as him but I did improve.
Rex will certainly be missed. I am glad Rex was in my life, especially in my early years.

Always a familiar face for me to see when attending LCC 1963 class reunions in addition to the Lima Senior 1959 class reunions. Always a smile and lots of conversation as we caught up on our lives. RIP Rex and bowl your next 300 in heaven!
