LINCOLN, IL - Emily R. McElhaney, 100, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at The Christian Village surrounded by her loving family.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, also at the funeral home with Pastor Adam Quine and Chaplain Ryan Edgecombe officiating. Burial will follow at Hittle Grove Cemetery in Armington, Ill.
Emily was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Delavan, Ill., the daughter of Richmond Robison and Ina (Goodyear) Robison. She married Ernest D. McElhaney on June 21, 1944, in Norfolk, Va. He preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1995.
Mrs. McElhaney was a 1937 graduate of Illinois State Normal University. She also studied at the University of Colorado and the University of Illinois. She taught high school home economics for 14 years. She was the Home Advisor with the University of Illinois Co-operative Extension Service for 23 years, 15 of those years as the Home Advisor in Logan County, Ill. She had also been Home Advisor in White County, Ill., for seven years. She was chosen for membership in Epsilon Sigma Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta, both honorary professional groups. In 1969 she was the recipient of the National Association of Extension Home Economists distinguished service award. She was the Lincoln Courier Woman of the Month in July 1977.
She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary (Hartsburg, Ill.), the Retired Teachers Association, Logan County Genealogical Society, a founding member of the Oasis Senior Center (Lincoln, Ill.), and a 60 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lincoln.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (James) Swartz of Watseka, Ill., and Juanita (Stan) Paulis of Springfield, Ill.; one son, Bob (Marta) McElhaney of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Martha Dale of Park Ridge, Ill., and Mary Helen Morgan of Payson, Ill.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Marilyn Cox; two brothers, Alfred Robison and Richmond Robison Jr.; and one sister, Ruth Kinsinger.
Memorials may be made to: First Presbyterian Church of Lincoln and will be accepted at the funeral home.
