Bernice Applin Obituary

Mrs. Bernice E. (Dunn) Applin was born on September 20, 1940, in Pine Mountain, Georgia, the daughter of Robert and Armi Lee (Ellison) Dunn. Mrs. Applin was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Matthew M. Applin, Sr, for thirty-eight years. Bernice was employed as a sanitary engineer at Community Hospital for many years. Sister Applin was a devoted and active member of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Applin was also very active in the community. She volunteered at the Rainbow Table, serving food to the less fortunate. Bernice was a long-time judge on the Springfield Community Beautification Committee, after having won the award on multiple occasions for Home of the Week. Mrs Applin loved gardening. Beautiful flowers and shrubs surrounded her home. And she also had her own vegetable garden. In addition, Bernice enjoyed traveling, both within the United States and abroad. Mrs. Applin was an exceptional cook. She spent hours listening to her favorite gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson. Sister Applin cherished and lived by Psalm 23. Bernice was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory children Howard R (Diane) Applin, Delores (Michael) Hargrose, Matthew M (Carolyn) Applin, Jr, Linda Applin, Charlotte Applin, Andre Applin, Dr William R. Cox, Dr Amanda Henry (Anthony Sherrod), Mark Henry; special nephew James (Alverda) Applin; special cousin Iris Scott; special friend Betty Todd. And a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mrs. Applin was preceded in death by both her parents, her late husband, Matthew M Applin, Sr, brothers, LeRoy Dunn, John Ellison, and Sammie Dunn; grandson, Nikki Applin, and special cousin Julia Ellison. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM at St John Missionary Baptist Church, 34 W. Pleasant Street (Mulberry Side), Springfield, Ohio (45506).
