Margaret Schulz Obituary

Margaret Wolf Schulz died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of April 30th, 2024, in the company of her son Stephen, his wife Brenda, and the loving care of the staff at St. Charles Senior Community. She was just shy of her 98th birthday. Margaret was a person of great faith, fearless and tough yet tender-hearted. She lived her life in the service of others.

The oldest of five children, Margaret Marie was born at home in the small town of Harper, Texas to her parents Hattie and Walter Wolf, on May 21st, 1926. Most of her childhood was spent in Gonzales, TX where her father was a Lutheran minister. In 1943 she left home for Sequin, TX where she attended Texas Lutheran College. Armed with a two year degree she got her first teaching job at a one-room schoolhouse in Gonzales. She would return to teaching later in life after her youngest child was born, teaching children in various inner-city elementary schools until her retirement in 1992.

While Margaret was in college her parents moved to head another church in Welcome, TX. It was there that a dashing, young Navy man recently returned home from the war, had the good fortune to meet her. She married Leslie Schulz in September, 1947 in the church presided over by her father. Not long after their union, Leslie decided to become a Lutheran minister himself. That decision would lead them from Texas to Ohio and guide their life together for the next 70 years.

As a young girl Margaret dreamed of being a missionary. She got her wish in an unorthodox way when her husband took the call to become pastor of a mission church in downtown Cincinnati in 1956. In the ensuing years, Margaret served First Lutheran Church in countless ways including Sunday school teacher, church council member, altar guild, substitute pianist, etc., but her favorite position was as a member of the church choir. Margaret loved to sing and more than anything she loved to sing church songs. Even in her 97th year her clear soprano could still he heard hitting the high notes of "Amazing Grace."

After their retirement Margaret and Leslie travelled extensively for many years including trips to Spain, Germany, Israel, Tahiti, and a cruise through the Panama Canal. Margaret became an avid sewer joining a volunteer group at Children's Hospital. Over a span of more than 15 years Margaret made nearly a thousand baby quilts for the hospital, not to mention tote bags and pot holders for all.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Leslie Schulz, and her sister Dorothy, and brothers Carl, William and David. She is survived by her four children: Marie Gunther (Charles), Carol Cryder, Joy Schulz, and Stephen Schulz (Brenda); as well as four grandchildren: Sasha Shepherd (Andrew), Molly Gunther, Katie Morgan, and Annie Morgan; and her great grandchild, Arthur Shepherd.

Well done, good and faithful servant.
