Carole Smith Obituary

Carol F. Smith, 78, formerly of New Milford, died in Marietta, GA on September 5, 2011 after a two-year battle with cancer.
A native of Queens, New York, Carol Helen Frick was the daughter of Helen and Emile Frick. At age 19, she represented the United States on the 1952 Olympic Diving Team in Helsinki, Finland. She received a BS from Brooklyn College and an MS from the University of Michigan, and taught in the athletic department at the University of Maryland. After moving to New Milford in the 1960s, Mrs. Smith became the physical education teacher at the Sherman School, where she taught for more than 25 years. She also taught dance and swimming to a generation of children and young adults in the New Milford area. In the late 1970s, she was in the first group elected to the Brooklyn College Athletics Hall of Fame.
During retirement, Mrs. Smith volunteered at New Milford Hospital, was president of the local AARP chapter, and taught computer classes at the town's Senior Center. After relocating to Georgia with her sister, Joan Frick, in 2005, Mrs. Smith enjoyed exercise, travel, and the Red Hat Society.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters and their families: Suzanne J. Smith and Alan Uomoto of Los Angeles, CA and their son, Garrett Uomoto; and Julianne S. Reeves of Marietta, GA and her daughters, Katherine and Olivia.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Mrs. Smith's honor to either the Cancer Center or General Hospice Fund of the WellStar Foundation, 2000 South Park Place, Atlanta, GA 30339 (www.wellstar.org).

Still today memories come up of Mrs smith. All the
Crazy fund things we did in jim class at the sherman school. My eighth grade class had a 50th reunion last year And we were able to have a tour of the old sherman school.
Once we hit the gym, the memory started flowing and her name was top of the list.. What a great lady she was.

Sorry to read of your loss. I dove with Carol on the Olympic Training Team at the St. George Hotel, Bklyn circa 1950-52. She was a great friend and diver whom I unfortunately lost contact with. Shirley Cawood Lempriere

Carole was a great teacher, friend, and inspired so many children (including our own). She taught them to dance, to take a chance, and tumble on the gym floor mats without any fear. Carol will always be in our hearts whenever we take chance and try something new. God bless your Mom...she was a gift from God.
With love,

I taught with Carole at the Sherman School. I so admired her teaching style, her sense of humor, and that she was an Olympian! With her amazing energy I am not surprised to learn of all she accomplished during her retirement. Peace and God's blessings to her children and all her family.

Carole was a loyal friend and colleague. I can see her now, coaching all those little angels the correct way to tumble, to fly around parallel bars with ease and to dance their wings off.
With love, Carole.

My sympathy to all of you. Carol was teaching in Sherman in 1972 when I began my teaching career. Over the years we shared many wonderful times and lots of laughs. She was always so proud of her daughters. How I laugh when I think of her story about a student named Yu. Treasure your memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

My sincere sympathy to Julianne and Suzanne. You have lost a great mom and the best of role models. I taught with her for many years and especially remember the role she played in our "Geography Day." Carol, of course, was in charge of the dances from around the world, which was a wildly successful part of the event. She even managed to teach the staff to dance the minuet which was no small feat.
May you both be comforted by the memories you have of this very special lady. Mrs. Nancy Broughel

Mrs. Smith was a Wonderful, Amazing Woman and would call me and many others her "grandson". She was very endearing and sweet person with a heart of Gold. I will remember the times we shared. God Bless.

Julianne and Suzanne, so sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a very special friend to our family and we are all better for having known her for over 50 years! Teaching us all how to swim and such a roll model for a working Mom. I can just picture her in heaven with Joan having a grand time.

What a wonderful woman And a wonderful teacher. From dancing to climbing ropes. This woman was very diversified and the pure fact that she put up with all the shermanites for so many years is such a feat. Having her as my teacher In the early seventies was certainly a blessing. She will never be forgotten. God bless the family That is left behind. May you find peace just knowing how loved Mrs Smith is and how she touched so many lives.

I have wonderful memories of Carol as the Sherman School PE teacher. She loved her job and introduced the students to gymnastics and some years to ballroom dancing. I loved having lunch with her each day as she shared her stories about her daughters and her students. She had a great laugh and beautiful smile.

My thoughts are with the family during this sad time. Mrs Smith taught me and my siblings at Sherman School and we often bring up all the great times we had in gym class like gymnastic shows and square dancing. Mrs Smith will be remembered in the hearts of many Sherman students.

When my kids are talking about their gym classes, my mind goes back to Mrs. Smith and her tom-tom, and all the gymnastics I got to attempt as I grew older. She was very patient with all of us despite our occsional pranks. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My sympathies to the family. She was a great lady. I went to Sherman School and Mrs. Smith was the PE teacher back in the 70's. I remember her classes were always fun. I always looked forward to gym class. I can still see her beating on the tom-tom walking back and forth while we did jumping-jacks. She will be missed, thoughts and prayers to her family.
