Kay Schaller
Kay Schaller of Lebanon, NH and formerly of Roxbury, CT passed on March 7, 2023 at the age of 93. She was born Kay Suzanne Morgan in Evanston, Illinois, the youngest of Wayne and Margarite Morgan's three children. As a girl she moved with her family to California and from there to Alaska. She majored in Anthropology at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, where she fell in love with a fellow student, the budding field biologist George Schaller. They married in 1957 and forged a life of adventure together, living in the Congo and then raising a family in India, Tanzania, and Pakistan. Even after they settled down in New England, she still sojourned abroad with George and spent months at a time in the swampy waterways of Brazil, the bamboo forests of China, and the highlands of Tibet.
Kay was an indispensable partner in life to her husband George for nearly seven decades, whether at home or in various countries, where she assisted in fieldwork, edited and typed his manuscripts, and did a million things that allowed him to pursue his extraordinary passion for wildlife studies. Kay was devoted to her sons, Eric and Mark, and adored her nieces, Linda and Susan, and her grandchildren, Jasper and Maddox. She homeschooled her sons during their early years abroad, keeping her children safe while also granting them the freedom to explore the wondrous wild lands surrounding them. People who knew Kay best know her as an uncommonly giving and generous person, someone who could make any place she lived a loving home.
