Blas Garza III
06/17/1964 - 11/06/2025
Surrounded by his loving family, Blas Garza III passed away at the age of 61 following a valiant battle against cancer. Blas lived a life guided by his faith in God and a deep sense of duty to his community leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. Blas' character was built on a foundation of courage and work ethic, which was vividly demonstrated in his distinguished 41-year career as a Webb County Sherriff's Deputy and in his diligent care of his family ranchland in Zapata County.
As a 7th generation rancher, Blas took great joy in teaching younger generations to respect the natural world, exemplifying strengths as a bold cattleman, an avid outdoorsman, and as a connoisseur of carne asada. Blas was always the first man leading the way into herds and pens, pushing cattle through the chutes, and fearlessly loading livestock headed to richer pastures. No cowboying task was ever too hard, and no day too hot to do whatever needed to be done.
As a career lawman, Blas served in four administrations under Sheriffs Mario Santos, Juan Garza, Rick Flores, and Martin Cuellar. Blas began his career as a jailer, then led various community affairs programs, and as a patrolman. More recently he served as bailiff for former Judge Danny Valdez and also as security for County Judge Tano Tijerina.
Blas will be deeply missed, but his readiness to lend a hand, his humor, and his unshakable love leave a legacy and a spirit that will endure. Blas was preceded in death by his mother, Graciela Ramirez Garza, and his father, Blas Garza, Jr. He is survived by his dedicated wife Maria Luisa; his two children, Anna Graciela (Mark) Rosas and Blas Gilberto Garza; his two siblings Dr. Sonia (Rene) Rodriguez and Priscilla (Simon) Peralta. He was very fortunate to have been a fond member of a very large family, leaving behind many close cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Blas' life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Everyone is encouraged to meet at the church since there will be no procession from the Funeral Home.
A private cremation will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made directly to this website:
