Fernando Sanchez Obituary

Fernando A. Sanchez
08/02/1945 - 10/05/2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Fernando Antonio Sanchez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on October 5, 2025. He was 80 years old and lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to his community in Webb and Duval Counties.

Born on August 2, 1945, Fernando was a devoted educator whose passion for teaching was evident in every classroom he graced. He served as a math teacher and counselor at Nixon High School, later becoming a school principal at United South Middle School and Step Academy. His commitment to nurturing young minds extended beyond traditional classrooms as he worked as a counselor at the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program. Fernando also shared his knowledge and love for education at Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas where he earned his PHD and taught. In addition to his educational contributions, Fernando was known for his vibrant spirit as a DJ at KVOZ. He enriched the cultural landscape of Texas through his role as the owner of Fernando's Ballroom in Zapata, where he proudly hosted legendary Tejano music icons, earning him a well-deserved induction into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame.

Fernando proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, undertaking two tours with both the Army and the Air Force. His bravery in the face of adversity earned him a Purple Heart, a testament to his commitment and sacrifice for the freedom and safety of others. Fernando's experiences in the military shaped him into the resolute and compassionate man that family and friends cherished.

A loving husband, Fernando cherished every moment spent dancing with his wife, creating memories that will forever be treasured by his family. His unwavering advocacy for troubled students showcased his compassionate nature and deep commitment to helping those in need. Fernando was a rancher and cattleman in the Duval County area and was respected and appreciated by the local community. Fernando respected and took pride in his cattle, always treating them respectfully. Fernando's impact on the lives he touched will resonate for generations.

Fernando will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, love, and education will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raul Sanchez and Hortencia Lerma; his siblings, Raul Sanchez, Humberto Sanchez, Gabriel Sanchez, Juan Manuel Sanchez, and Hortencia Herrera.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 40 years of marriage, Severita Sanchez; his children, Fernando (Natasha) Sanchez Jr., Joanne Sanchez Gutierrez (Ricardo Treviño), Gerardo Sanchez, and Federico (Lesly) Gutierrez; his grandchildren, Guinevere Vela, Clarissa Gutierrez, Lukas Gutierrez, and Sophia Gutierrez; his siblings, Anselmo (Alejandra) Sanchez, Nydia Gutierrez, and Yolanda Uscanga; his sisters-in-law, Maria Elena Sanchez, Teresa Sanchez, and Estela Sanchez; his brother-in-law, Reyes Herrera, and a daughter who was seen as their own Luz Elena Sanchez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The family will be receiving condolences on Saturday evening, October 25, 2025 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where Military Honors will commence at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary at 7 p.m.
