SALOMON ABREGO JR.

Salomon Abrego Jr. Was born in February 24th 1923. Graduated in 1942 from Martin High School. Volunteered for the Army in 1942, at the age of 18 where he served in WW II from 1942-1945. Mr. Salomon was a clinical, infantry, and a combat medic under the 68th Medical Regiment. Served under the 1st Army in Normandy under the command of General Omar Bradley and the 3rd Army in Czechoslovakia under the command of General George P. Patton. Salomon Abrego saw action in Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe earning him 5 bronze stars. In December 16, 1944 he was nearly captured during the Battle of the Bulge in Malmedy. Mr. Abrego was in Czechoslovakia when the war ended. His older brother, Guillermo Abrego, died in WW II on month before the war ended. He attended the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy celebration, where he received a Medal from the Mayor of Beaudeux. He has attended several Army Reunions in various cities throughout the U.S.
Abrego was recognized in the U.S. World War 2 World History Project.
He enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin in 1946 and graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in 1950.
Salomon worked as a pharmacist and he has devoted 63 years of service to the community of Laredo retiring at 90 years old. Last place of work was Gateway Community Center. His Hobbies include photography, traveling, current events, gardening and carpentry. His Photographs have won numerous awards. He was also known for his talented ballroom dancing with his wife. He has traveled to 39 countries and was a avid reader in current events and history.
He changed the L.I.S.D. dress code policy in 1970 allowing Female Students to wear pants to school and allowing students to wear the United States Flag on clothing.
He is Proceeded in death by his parents Salomon Abrego Sr., Elvira Trevino and his wife Evelyn Newell.
Left to Cherish his memory is his one sister Elvira Andrew, Children David Abrego, Melita Abrego, Virginia Abrego, Billie Godines, Son-in-law Roque Godines, 6 Grand Children, 11 Great Grand Children and 3 Great Great Grand Children and Numerous Nephews and Nieces.
His ashes will be taken later for a private Military Burial in the beautiful Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery next to his wife, Evelyn Newell, who he had been married to for 55 years.
