Ruby Schroeder

1917 - 2010

Ruby Schroeder, loving wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord on February 21, 2010 after a brief illness. She was 92 years old.
She was born in Plymouth, Nebraska on June 13, 1917. When she was 6 months old the family moved to Canada. Ruby's early years were spent in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, on the family farm. At the age of 10 Ruby's family moved into town.
This move would have special meaning for the young girl. One of her chores was to get water from the town pump. Ruby was unaware that she had caught the eye of the new pastor's son, Peter. He would watch from the parsonage's window and when she would be getting water, he would be there to get water too, whether his buckets were empty or not. A special relationship began and on December 28, 1942 they were married. Because of the war, they were married in Linton North Dakota with his father officiating.
The early years of their marriage were spent in Great Falls, Montana. Peter was the commisary officer while Ruby did secretarial work. Their first child, Karen, was born. Karen's birth was shadowed by sadness when she died in early infancy. As the war ended, the couple were sent to Stockton Field. A daughter, Sandra soon followed and 5 years later another daughter named Trudy was born. They established their home in Lodi where they lived for 60 years.
Ruby enjoyed being a mother. She also loved to entertain. Family and friends frequented their home. It was rare for a Sunday to go by without someone being invited home for Sunday dinner. When there was a need, Ruby would help her husband Peter in his flourishing insurance business.
Their church home was important to Ruby. Ruby and Peter were charter members of Temple Baptist Church. She loved working in the church library. When needed she would gladly bake cookies, cakes or pies or cook a casserole if needed for the church.
Ruby is preceded in death by her husband Peter. They were married for 66 years. Two daughters preceded her in death; Karen at birth and Sandra died at the age of 23 in a car accident. She is survived by her daughter Trudy Schroeder who lives in Lodi. The delight of her life was their granddaughter, Joelle Gross who lives in Cincinnati with her husband Mike. She is also survived by one sister, Ruth Schroeder who lives with her husband John in Morris, Manitoba; and 2 sisters-in-law, Doris Schroeder and Joanne (Harry) Wiebe and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2-8 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way, Lodi.
Her commital will be private. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. The service is at Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Perry Kallis officiating. We welcome you to share in a celebration of Ruby's life.
