Thomas Shock Obituary

Thomas Grant Shock, a recently retired Lodi podiatrist, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 1, 2018 at his home in Lodi. He was 67 years old. He was born in San Francisco, CA to James W. and Sarah G. Shock.

Tom grew up in San Rafael, CA and graduated from San Rafael High School. He then attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA where he met Nancy Pearson playing Frisbee on the lawn. The two started dating shortly after. Tom returned to his summer work at the American Licorice Factory in San Francisco. He transferred to the University of California Riverside in his third year of college and later graduated in 1972 with a degree in economics.

Tom and Nancy married in Cupertino, CA and settled in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Tom decided to go back to school part time to study for his pre-med classes and worked as a carpenter full time. Tom was accepted into the Masters program at the University of Pacific and moved to Stockton, CA with Nancy and their three-day-old son, Tracy. To help cover education costs, Tom and Nancy began fixing up and reselling houses in Stockton. After two years working and studying, Tom began studies at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. He commuted to school returning on the weekends while Nancy stayed behind and taught junior high school. Upon graduating, Tom moved to Anaheim to complete his surgical residency. Tom and Nancy welcomed their second child, Dustin, in Tom's final year of residency.

A dream came true in 1985, when Tom opened up Lodi Podiatry and moved his family to Lodi. The practice grew, adding Dr. Kevin Stroh in 1987. Tom and Nancy welcomed their daughter, Shelby, that summer. Tom and Kevin expanded their practice to include offices in Stockton and Jackson. That duo in combination with a loyal, hardworking staff made Lodi Podiatry bloom into something that provided Tom pride every day. Dr. Alex Curfman joined the team in September 2017 allowing Tom the opportunity to retire June 1, 2018.

Shock was active in Lodi Tokay Rotary Club from 1985 to 2009 and was club president during the 2005-06 year. He was an active supporter of Lodi House, Lodi Boys & Girls Club and Omega Nu. Tom encouraged Shelby to apply for a Rotary exchange program during the summer of 2003. Tom and Nancy took Shelby to Belgium to meet her host family and created a bond that lasted for years. The Belgian family refers to their relationship as a love story with the Shock family.

Tom was a regular at two gyms and an avid runner before turning to his love of cycling. He completed more than a dozen weeklong rides in Oregon, California, Colorado, and Virginia. He also completed many strenuous backpack trips in the mountains of the Western U.S. including Mt. Whitney.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. His enthusiasm, infectious laugh and ready smile would lift the mood of all around him. He loved dressing up as Kris Kringle in his white Victorian costume and stopping at his friends' homes to visit the children at Christmas time. When not playing the jolly old elf, Tom could be counted on to wear the gaudiest sweaters to win Ugly Christmas Sweater contests. He wore colorful outrageous wigs and outfits as he cheered on the Belgian soccer team and sported royal blue to support his beloved Chicago Cubs.

His parents and his brothers Jeff and William preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Nancy, their children Tracy Shock and wife Janai, Dustin Shock and wife Karis and Shelby Tomek and husband Wyatt, and four grandchildren Preston, Mason, Lola, and Monroe Shock. He anxiously anticipated arrival of his fifth grandchild in October. Nancy's parents Joan and Lloyd Pearson, his sisters Jane Bowse and husband George, Stacey Powers and husband Bud and nieces and nephew Sarah Eddy and husband John, Samantha Powers and John Powers, his sister and brother in law Becky and Don Pearson also survive him. He was also ever so grateful for the loving supportive community that surrounds the place he chose to raise his family.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 10 at First Baptist Church, 267 N. Mills Ave, Lodi, CA. The Shock children will be leading a bicycling procession from First Baptist Church to the Celebration of Life. Join them in your Cubbies or biking gear if you feel so inclined. A Bike Lodi valet will watch bikes ridden to the service and bicyclists are encouraged to make the 3.8 mile ride from the church to the reception at the Manna Estate, 21372 N. May Rd., Acampo, CA. The reception will be from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Private committal will held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following charities: Lodi House (801 S. Washington St., Lodi, 95240); Lodi Boys and Girls Club (275 Popular Street, Lodi 95240); Rotary International (1560 Sherman Ave, Evanston, IL 60201) or the National Park Foundation (1110 Vermont Ave., NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005).

I will always remember you, Dr. Shock, as one of the most kind and fun people to be around, and someone who lived life to its fullest!

You always seemed to have the best attitude about life and were always upbeat and positive.

Your love and pride for your family was palpable and you always made sure that everyone around you felt good in your presence.

Above all, thank you for your generosity, always. This virtue has always been and will continue to live on in your family as anyone who knows the Shocks knows that they´d literally give you the shirt off their back!

My thoughts, prayers, and support are with you, Shock family, who remember Tom today and always.

As my uncle became unable to take care of his feet, Dr. Shock became a regular stop in our rounds of medical visits. Every visit was engaging while hearing about Dr. Shock's latest bicycle venture, or important event in his life. He always remembered my uncle's name, and worked really hard to help him be comfortable while in the office.

My absolute surprise to listen to a voice mail telling me of Dr. Shock's untimely death was undoubtedly one of the most unexpected bits of news I have received in my life. I am so sorry the Shock family lost their husband, father, and grandfather in such a tragic way. Also, to all the coworkers, neighbors, and friends who were connected regularly to Dr. Shock, I share your sorrow.

May the joy of Dr. Shock's life stay with you all as you mourn his passing.

Nancy and family,

I enjoyed working for/with Tom in the summer of 1978 remodeling houses. I have so many fond memories from that summer, it shaped the way I approached many things in life.

Dear Nancy and family. I grew up with Dr Tom in San Rafael and very much enjoyed seeing him from time to time usually in Mountain Hardware in Truckee, both of us getting items for repairs to our cabins. We were both looking forward to our 50 year high school reunion this Sat the 25th of August. His smile was contagious and I very much enjoyed hearing about his growing family and his retirement plans. I am very lucky to have known him. I am so very sorry for your loss. I was saddened to learn of Dr. Shock's
death. When I taught at Lakewood School I
was fortunate to have both Tom and Nancy's
strong support. Dr. Shock was a willing volunteer for field trips. Not many fathers were up to that task, but he did it with good cheer and enthusiasm.
Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathy. I know he will be deeply missed.

Dear Nancy, Tracy (Buck), Dustin, Shelby & families,
Thank you for letting us share in a few of the memories of your husband, dad & dampa!
The service was a lovely representation of who he was!
We are angered and heart broken that such a kind, funny, generous, active and easy going man was so tragically taken away at st such a young age and beautiful time in his life.
I hope the turn out at the celebration of his life showed you how many people care and want to support you during this very difficult time.
You are a strong & close knit family, but please do not hesitate to reach out for help of any kind, as it would be an honor to serve you.
God bless you all.
Sincerely, Janis Christy

I am absolutely heartbroken of Dr. Shocks passing! He has been a huge part of my life for the past eleven years! I have had so many issues with my feet and I know I caused him a lot of frustration! Sorry Dr. Shock! No matter what he never gave up on me and always was so kind to me and my family! Dr. Shock was always there with his upbeat attitude, huge smile and his laugh! Even when I was cussing like a truck drive as he gave me my shots in my many booboos he would just laugh! I truly I am going to miss him!!! It was sad for me when he retired but I was so happy for him, he was going to get to spend time with his family and do the things he loved! No one deserved it more! I was so looking forward to running into him in Lodi! I would hear him call out my name Daaana! In his silly voice! I will miss you Dr. Shock!!! Our family will always have you in our heart! To his family and Friend I am so sorry for your loss, although I could not make the service due to my Sister being diagnosed with breast cancer and needing to deal with some things, my heart has been with you all day! I am sending love and prayers your way! DR. SHOCK SORE WITH THE ANGELS!

He enjoyed life to the fullest! I always loved hearing his story when he came back from his trips they were so hilarious & adventures. He treated his patients like they were his friends so loving & caring the treatment he gave each & everyone of them. I am beyond sad about the death of Dr. Thomas Shock. He was the kindest doctor I have ever met. I was afraid of having surgery but he was so sweet and gentle my fears just melted. Many years later I had to have another surgery. He remembered my name and remembered that my husband and I were from Chicago and were avid Cubs fans. I will never forget him. I will never forget Dr.Shock, he made me laugh and made me feel so at ease about having surgery on my foot. I'll never forget when I went in to have my stitches taken out, when he was done he left the room then he poked his head back in and said"are u mad at me Sandi?" Thought I'd die laughing. Dr Shock was a bright light in this dark world of ours! He was one in a million! Loved by the staff and his patients, which they were more like friends to him than patients, he truly cared for them. I have been blessed to be at Lodi Podiatry Group for over 25 years,Dr Shock was more like family than a boss. I will never forget the things I have learned from him mostly always strive to do your best. I will forever hear his laugh in my mind, it was always like a party in the office when he was seeing patients he would tell them stories and laugh with them and sometimes cry with them. He was always so full of life and energy, we would always say, he could run circles around us, and he did! The memories we have of him bring so much joy and love.
It has been nice to hear from patients and friends who have called the office, sent cards or stopped by to share their grief and sorrow over the loss of a wonderful Doctor and friend.
I learned a lot about the Cubs from Dr Shock since he was a huge Cubbies fan. When the world series was happening he brought in his W flag, we didn't know what it meant and he said the flag goes out when the Cubs are winning, today as I was pulling into work I was looking at Dr Shock's name still on our building and how our Suite letter W is so fitting, Dr Shock you were a winner in life and especially with your family!
My prayers and my love go out to his precious family during their time of grief. You all have been such a blessing in my life throughout the years.
Love

The day the light went out in Lodi...A precious man that was really something special that will NEVER be replaced. He gave so much of his heart to any and all. I am honored to have had him in my life. As a boss and a friend, a mentor and an example of how to be the best you can be. I thank the Lord to have been blessed to be part of his life for the years that I've been here, to be a part of the Lodi Podiatry Group family. So many wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. God bless the family in this time of adjustment and sorrow. God speed Dr. Shock see you heaven. Love Karen Granadoz-Joyner

I am a patient of LodiPodiatry and when in the office to see my Dr. Was the last time I saw Dr Shock at the counter working on a patient impressions for there feet. I was scheduling my next appointment and talking with the girls at the appointment desk, I made a comment on how Happy I was to find such a caring Dr and office staff. I Looked up and Dr Shick smiled at me and said Thank You. Even though he was not my treating Physician, he was so kind. My heart goes out to his family at this most difficult time. My husband had an appointment In May and Dr Stroh was not in so the receptionist said she could change my husbands appointment to May 31 at 4:15 PM. My husband had the pleasure to be seen by Dr Shock and was told by Dr Shock, he was his last Patient as he was retiring. My husband got to hear of Dr Shocks retirement plans and how he and his bicycle group were going to take a huge trip sometime in March 2019, where they would put the rear tire of there bikes in the Pacific Ocean and continue there ride, riding some 60 miles a day and eventually end up in Florida where they would put the front tire of there bikes in the Atlantic Ocean. My husband was so excited to share his visit with Dr Shock when he got home and honored he got to have his diabetic nail trim by him. He said what a wonderful person Dr Shock was. May he rest in peace. I will be seeing Dr Stroh for my post op surgery visit this Wednesday and I know that office will never be the same. My Prayers are for all that work there and most of all for Dr Shocks Family. He was a Wonderful Man and a Great Dr. God Speed Dr Shock , you will always be remembered.
