Charlie was born on Oct. 17, 1948, in Camp Lee, Virginia to Charles Albert "Pete" Smith Sr. and Frances Lois Smith. Surviving are his sons, Chris Smith and Caleb (Lori) Rife; brothers, Bob (Jo) Carter, Larry (Betty) Sater, and Fred Smith; sisters, Paula Reaves and Lois McManaway; grandchildren, Samm (Kody) Sinisgalli, Cameron Smith, Brianna Rife, and Kaila Rife; canine companion, Ukiah; and feline friend, Marley.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Frances Smith; and sister, Patty Beavers.

The last time I saw Charlie was when the Hitchhikers were playing there final concert at Stuarts Opera House. Charlie was standing on the sidewalk by the side entrance with a couple of other gentlement. He stopped me and we started talking about the days we use to play music at his house or my house. He told the two gentlemen he was with that I taught him four chords and now we could use them to play every song we knew. They weren't always the right chords but we made them fit. Rest in peace old friend. You will be missed by many.

(I affectionately referred to as Chaz)

Will always be remembered as: a man of the people. A smart man , eccentric, down to earth, and an all around cool person. Who lite up any room he was in with joy and laughter. A man that enjoys being around his family so much, that it was always so easy to see.

I got to know him through visits with my grandmother Paula Reeves, and everytime I saw him, he was always enamored with seeing everyone; watching the kids play, enjoying life. He tells jokes, but also tells it how it is. Which is one of the reasons, hes such a funny guy. When hes around, its always a good time, and a good laugh. We laughed, he laughed. He was always good company, with a good outlook on life. And we were always happy to see him.

He is always so positive, and supportive of me and my family, and even if he was far, he still made extra effort to show love and support for me and my children, following all of our events and life online.❤ I could always count on him being there, showing love and positivity no matter what.

He will be very missed. I know that the same way he gave a piece of his heart to everyone he knew; that I will carry a piece of his heart with me.

❤My heart, soul, and prayers go out to Chaz's family and friends, which I know is alot, because he was an amazing guy who touched many lives

My he rest peacefully with our father in heaven, and be greeted by God, angels, and all of our heavenly family members Im sad that you arent here, but im happy your in a better place, and will carry you with me until I see you again. I love you.

So until we meet again Chaz...
We love you!

My thoughts and prayers go out to Junior (as I always knew him by). Jr and I went to high school and graduated together as well as going through Basic Training in the Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Our paths never crossed after basic. He was a very quite, talented and well liked classmate and was able to share his talent later in life. RIP! Courtney Haning

Charlie... Thank you. Thank you for words of encouragement. Thank you for checking my negativity. Thank you for the inspiration and influence that your music had on mine. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone. thank you for letting us witness somebody actually doing it their way. Had i known the last time we talked would be our last, i would have told you everything i´ve just mentioned and then some. It has been a pleasure. Maybe we will get to jam sometime. Much love to you and your family who will miss you dearly.

Charlie was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He was the person I called when I was happy about something and if I was sad, he would help me find the positive and cheer me up. When something exciting happened, he was the person I first thought to call to share. I am going to be lost. I am happy he has no more pain and happy that he has joined with our Mom, and sister. Grandma, grandpa, and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. RIP Charlie, see you soon.
