Eleanor Bowers Obituary
She moved with her parents to Laurelville, Ohio, where she met, fell in love and married Robert (Bob) Bowers (deceased) in 1945 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Laurelville, where she and her late husband were members. Their union gave two children, Barbara (Bowers) Hettinger (deceased), and Robert Bowers II.
She graduated with honors from Ohio University in 1964, with a BS in elementary education. She taught for 30 years, mostly in junior high school at Laurelville and Logan Elm Schools. During her time teaching, she was involved with assisting her husband with the Apple House; church activities such as participating in the choir, teaching Sunday School class, and assisting with summer Bible School. She was an active member of the Eastern Star, serving as a past worthy matron; and a member of Alpha Xi Delta Kappa Gamma, serving as president.
After retiring, Eleanor volunteered at the Laurelville Elementary Kindergarten for 20 years, helping her daughter Barbara; served as a council member for the Village of Laurelville; and traveled with her husband.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Edgar O. Kelley. Eleanor is survived by her son Bobby (Sherry) Bowers; son-in-law Jim Hettinger; grandchildren Jason (Ellen) Hettinger, Jill (Josh) Pippy, Claudia (Matt) Overman, Alicia (Andy) Fruehing, and Marissa (Kyle) Andrews; and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at the Wellman Funeral Home, Laurelville. Burial will follow in Green Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. in Laurelville. Memorial contributions are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, 18628 Laurel, Laurelville, Ohio 43135.
