Turtoro, Albert A.

Albert A. Turtoro, of Valley Cottage, NY, died January 2, 2012. He was 88.

Born March 24, 1923 in McKee's Rocks, PA, Al was a New Yorker most of his life. He grew up on East Broadway in Manhattan, and then in the Bronx. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, and went on to marry his childhood sweetheart, Catherine, June 13, 1943 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Bronx, NY. They were married for 59 years before his wife's death in 2002.

Al was a railroad man for the long haul, starting as a clerk in the General Accounting Office at the New York Central Railroad in 1941. Retiring in 1983 as the executive assistant to the vp, operations at Metro North.

An avid musician, he played the piano up until the end of his life. In the 40's, Al had his own band.

During WWII, Al ran a radar unit covering the Normandy landings, and, from Hastings, England, vectored fighters to shoot down buzz bombs. Then he operated a mobile unit, supporting Gen. Patton's Third Army, in France, through to the Black Forest, and on to Nuremburg.

He is survived by his devoted children, Laura and her husband John DeLellis, Kenneth and his wife, Anne Turtoro and two cherished grandsons, Matthew and Christopher Turtoro; and many loving nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday Jan. 5, 2012 at 9:45 am at St. Paul's Church, 82 Lake Road, Congers. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla.
