Brian Joseph Slavin died on June 28, 2010 at his home. Brian was born in North Tarrytown on June 17, 1940 to Joseph and Mary Duby Slavin. He graduated from St. Theresa's Grammar School and was a member of the first graduating class of Sleepy Hollow High School in 1958. He attended Manhattan College before volunteering for the Navy in 1963. He served on the Turner Joy and was present at the Gulf of Tonkin incident. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation. He was particularly proud of his Navy service and faithfully attended every Turner Joy reunion. In 1970, following his graduation from Lehman College with a Bachelor's degree in Education Recreation, he joined the Town of Yorktown Department of Recreation, which was in it's infancy. As Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, he was the motivating force who developed and administered one of the premier recreation programs in Westchester County. During his 32 years of service he built a state of the art aquatic facility at Shrub Oak which has been dedicated in his name. He was also credited with recreational and sporting leagues for the youth of Yorktown. He established trails at Turkey Mountain, the summer concert series with the Lions Club, and was on the board of Nor-West from 1976-2002. Brian was a member of the Westchester Recreation and parks Society and received the prestigious Peter J. Mayer Award of Merit for lifetime achievement in recreation in 2002. Brian was an avid golfer and sports fan and a member of Knollwood Country Club for many years. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1042. He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife Peggy, his brother Kevin and Rita of Yorktown, and his step-children Mary Beth and (Jeff) Schreier of Katonah, Anne Daly of Tarrytown and John and (Regina) Daly of Ossining and three step-grandchildren Kathleen and (Michael) Blair of South Grafton, Massachusetts and Kara and Megan Schreier of Katonah. Visitation will be at COFFEY FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 7-9 PM and Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
