AGE: 95 • White Plains
Edgar Sands passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 14, 2013. He was 95 years old. Born in Hamburg, Germany, he came to the U.S. in 1938. After serving in the United States Army in WWII, he moved to White Plains in 1951. For 67 years, he was a spice importer and became president of the company, Max Van Pels, Inc. in 1971 and continued to work until his passing. He was the beloved husband of his late wife, Gabrielle, treasured father of his late daughter, Marjorie and his son Edward. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jeffrey Baker and his wife Sherry, and Michael Baker, Jake and Zachary Sands and Cara Forray, great-grandchildren, Mia and Roan Forray, and daughter-in-law Elane Sands. He will be remembered for his manners, grace, dignity, generosity and above all, his unwavering spirit of love and support. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10a.m. at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave at South Broadway, White Plains. Interment will be in the Sharon Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Cancer Society or The Fresh Air Fund.

One of the most often-asked questions at our dinner table was, "Have you heard from Mr. Sands?" He was a remarkable man. His wit and wisdom brightened the lives of so many and his example set a standard that will be hard to follow.
Our hearts go out to every member of the Sands family at this very sad time.

I am so saddened to hear this news. I will always have fond memories of great times at the Sands, when we all lived on Harvard Ct.
